West Sussex stretches across 768 square miles of southern England, where the South Downs National Park runs like a chalk spine from the Hampshire border to the dramatic cliff edge at Beachy Head's neighbour, Chanctonbury Ring. The cathedral city of Chichester, with its 900-year-old Norman cathedral, sits just 15 miles from the bustling seaside town of Worthing, while the market town of Arundel and its imposing medieval castle lie roughly 18 miles east of Chichester along the A27. Beyond the Downs, you can explore the ancient woodland of St Leonard's Forest near Horsham, wander the ornamental gardens at Nymans (a National Trust estate near Haywards Heath), or spend a morning at the Weald and Downland Living Museum, home to over 50 rescued historic buildings. The county's mix of narrow country lanes, open downland roads and well-connected A-roads makes it ideal territory for both campervans and larger motorhomes. Coastal routes between Selsey and Shoreham-by-Sea offer easy, flat driving with regular stopping points, while inland lanes through villages like Petworth and Steyning reward slower exploration. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across West Sussex, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit everything from a weekend couple's getaway to a family adventure through the South Downs.
West Sussex is wonderful from late spring through to early autumn. May and June bring wildflower displays across the South Downs, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in late June or early July draws motorsport fans from across the country. The Chichester Festival Theatre season runs from April to November, giving you a cultural reason to visit well beyond summer. Campsites across West Sussex tend to be quieter in September and October, when the beech woods turn golden and you can enjoy the coast without the school-holiday crowds. Booking your campervan through Yescapa outside peak months often means better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow the West Sussex coastline from Chichester Harbour to Shoreham-by-Sea, roughly 80 km of flat, easy driving. Stop at Pagham Harbour nature reserve and Worthing Pier, with plenty of campervan-friendly parking along the seafront.
A 95 km route through the Arun Valley taking in Arundel Castle, the Amberley Museum and the pretty village of Storrington. The roads suit both campervans and motorhomes, with gentle gradients and well-maintained surfaces throughout West Sussex.
Trace the northern edge of the South Downs across West Sussex, covering around 180 km from Harting Down to Ditchling Beacon. Visit Petworth House, the Weald and Downland Living Museum, and Devil's Dyke for panoramic views.
Head north into the West Sussex Weald on this 200 km route linking Horsham, Crawley, and East Grinstead. Explore Nymans gardens, Wakehurst botanic garden, and St Leonard's Forest. Motorhome pitches are plentiful at rural campsites along the way.
A 260 km loop covering coast, downs, and weald. Start in Chichester, head to Selsey Bill, follow the coast to Shoreham, climb into the South Downs, then loop north through Horsham before returning west. A campervan is ideal for the varied roads.
This 300 km route explores West Sussex's borders, from Midhurst and Cowdray Park in the west to the High Weald near East Grinstead. Cross into the South Downs at Chanctonbury Ring and finish along the coast at Littlehampton. Allow time for detours.

West Sussex offers a fine spread of campsites, from coastal pitches with sea views to sheltered woodland spots in the Weald. Many sites provide electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Whether you prefer waking up near the beach at Selsey or tucked into the South Downs near Arundel, you will find well-equipped sites across the county.
West Sussex is served by the A27, which runs east to west along the coastal plain linking Chichester to Brighton, and the A23/M23 corridor connecting the county to London and Gatwick Airport. There are no toll roads in West Sussex. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. The A29 and A24 provide useful north–south routes through the South Downs, though some sections are single carriageway with limited overtaking opportunities. Rest areas and lay-bys are well spaced along major routes.
We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
We hired the van for 8 nights and it was perfect. Went up to the mountains and down to the beach. It was very spacious and well kitted out. The owners are also lovely, accommodating and quick to reply to our message
Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
