Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, has drawn pilgrims and visitors for over 800 years, making this Kent city one of England's most historically significant destinations. The cathedral precinct sits at the heart of a compact, walkable centre where medieval lanes wind past timber-framed houses and ancient city walls. Beyond the cathedral, you can explore The Canterbury Tales attraction on St Margaret's Street, stroll through Westgate Gardens beside the River Great Stour, or step inside the Beaney House of Art & Knowledge for free exhibitions on local heritage. The Roman Museum on Butchery Lane reveals mosaics and artefacts from the city's earliest settlement. Whitstable, famous for its oyster harbour, is just 10 km north, while the white cliffs at Dover sit roughly 25 km to the south-east — both make for easy day trips. The surrounding countryside is largely flat, with wide A-roads connecting Canterbury to the coast, so navigating a motorhome through east Kent is straightforward. Narrow sections inside the old city walls mean you will want to park up and walk into the centre on foot. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner, often picking up your vehicle right here in Kent. That peer-to-peer approach keeps costs reasonable and gives you insider tips from someone who knows the area well.
Canterbury is enjoyable year-round, though late spring through early autumn offers the longest days for exploring. The Canterbury Festival, held each October, fills the city with music, theatre, and literary events across two weeks. In summer, the Whitstable Oyster Festival in late July draws food lovers to the coast just 10 km away. Book your campervan through Yescapa during shoulder months like May or September for wider vehicle choice and competitive peer-to-peer pricing. Campsites around east Kent are generally well-serviced, and quieter periods mean easier pitching near the coast.
Canterbury is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 10 km north to Whitstable's harbour and shingle beach. Browse the independent shops along Harbour Street and sample fresh oysters at the Royal Native Oyster Stores. Campervan parking is available along Tankerton seafront, and you can walk the coastal path towards Herne Bay for wider views.
Drive 25 km south-east to Dover and take in the iconic White Cliffs from the National Trust visitor centre. Explore Dover Castle, one of England's largest fortifications, perched above the port. Motorhome-friendly parking is available near the castle entrance, making this a comfortable short trip from Canterbury.
Cover 105 km south-west to Brighton along the A27. Stop at Eastbourne to walk the Seven Sisters cliffs, then continue to Brighton's seafront and the Royal Pavilion. Canterbury to the coast offers plenty of campervan-friendly sites in the South Downs National Park along the way.
Travel 130 km south-west through the Kent and Sussex countryside. Wander the cobbled streets of Rye, visit Lamb House, then continue to Hastings for its Old Town fishing quarter and the ruins of Hastings Castle. Several well-equipped campsites sit between the two towns near Winchelsea.
A 210 km drive west takes you from Canterbury through Hampshire to the New Forest National Park. Explore Lyndhurst village, cycle the forest trails, and spot wild ponies. Motorhome pitches at Hollands Wood or Setthorns are spacious and well-serviced, ideal for a longer break.
Head 250 km north-west from Canterbury into the Cotswolds. Visit Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, and the gardens at Blenheim Palace near Woodstock. Campervan touring here is relaxed, with quiet lanes linking honey-stone villages and several certified campsites dotted across the hills.

Canterbury sits in the heart of east Kent, so you are never far from well-maintained campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Options range from rural farm sites with electric hook-ups and modern shower blocks to larger parks closer to the coast offering laundry facilities and on-site shops. Most sites around Canterbury welcome seasonal and overnight visitors alike, with hardstanding pitches available for larger vehicles.
Canterbury's historic centre has a low-emission zone and narrow medieval streets, so larger vehicles should use designated park-and-ride or peripheral car parks. Overnight parking in a motorhome or campervan is not permitted on most city-centre streets, but several sites on the outskirts welcome larger vehicles. Always check height barriers before entering any multi-storey facility.
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had a great experience. All went smoothly and the camper van was perfect. Mike was very accommodating and communicative throughout and we would recommend highly.
Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
