Why choose Portsmouth for your road trip

Portsmouth — a city worth exploring

Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard is home to three of the Royal Navy's most famous warships, including HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Sitting on Portsea Island, Portsmouth is the only city in the United Kingdom built entirely on an island, giving it a distinctive coastal character that rewards exploration by campervan or motorhome. The Spinnaker Tower rises 170 metres above Gunwharf Quays, offering panoramic views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, just 8 km to the south. History enthusiasts can spend hours at the D-Day Story in Southsea, the only museum in the country dedicated to the Allied landings of 1944. A short stroll along Southsea seafront brings you to the Blue Reef Aquarium and the charming independent shops of Albert Road. For a change of scenery, the South Downs National Park begins only 10 km to the north, where rolling chalk hills and quiet lanes make for excellent day trips. Winchester, the ancient capital of England, sits 30 km to the north-west and is well worth a visit. Portsmouth's compact layout and flat terrain make it easy to navigate, though some older streets near Old Portsmouth can be narrow. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, which means you often get insider tips on the best routes and parking spots around the city.

Best time to visit

Portsmouth comes alive between May and September, when long daylight hours make the most of its seafront setting. The Victorious Festival, held each August at Southsea Common, draws thousands for live music right by the coast. In June, the city celebrates its naval heritage during Portsmouth International Kite Festival on Southsea Common. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during spring or early autumn gives you the advantage of peer-to-peer pricing, often more affordable than peak summer rates. Campsites around Portsea Island and the surrounding Hampshire coast tend to be quieter in May and September, so you can enjoy more flexibility with pitches.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
