Why hire a campervan or motorhome in USA

USA — a country worth exploring

The USA stretches across 4,800 km from the Atlantic to the Pacific, making it one of the most rewarding countries on earth to explore by road. From the sandstone arches of Arches National Park in Utah to the misty forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the most visited national park in the country with over 12 million visitors a year — there is an extraordinary range of landscapes to discover at your own pace. Drive the 750 km between San Francisco and Los Angeles along the legendary Pacific Coast Highway, or cover the 440 km from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon's South Rim for one of the world's most dramatic viewpoints. The country's well-maintained interstate system and thousands of dedicated RV-friendly campsites make travelling by campervan or motorhome both practical and comfortable, whether you are crossing the wide-open plains of Montana or winding through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Yescapa connects you directly with private owners across the USA, so you can hire a campervan close to your starting point — be it Miami, Denver, or Seattle — and choose from a wide variety of vehicles to suit your group. With peer-to-peer pricing and local knowledge from owners who know their region best, it is a flexible and personal way to hit the open road.

Best time to visit

The USA offers year-round road-trip possibilities depending on where you head. Late spring through to early autumn — May to October — is ideal for national park routes, with campsite availability at its widest. Catch Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October for a spectacular start or finish to an autumn campervan trip. Summer is peak season, so booking your motorhome hire on Yescapa early gives you the best choice of vehicles and competitive peer-to-peer rates. In winter, the southern states — Florida, Arizona, Texas — stay warm and welcoming, making the USA a genuine all-season destination.

The best road trips in USA

This 250 km drive takes you from Miami through Key Largo and Islamorada to Key West, crossing the iconic Seven Mile Bridge. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy snorkelling stops, seafood shacks, and waterfront campsites suited to campervans along the Overseas Highway.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Discovery

280 km 3–6 days

Covering 280 km between Asheville, North Carolina, and Roanoke, Virginia, this route winds through the Appalachian highlands. Expect scenic overlooks, wildflower meadows, and well-maintained pull-offs ideal for motorhomes. Best enjoyed over 3–6 days in the USA's autumn colour season.

The Southwest National Park Trail

A 700 km loop from Las Vegas through Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon. Over 7–11 days you can explore red-rock canyons and desert plateaus, with spacious campsites at each park welcoming both campervans and motorhomes. Fill up on water and fuel between stops.

The Pacific Coast Highway Tour

450 km 5–8 days

Drive 450 km along the USA's western edge from San Francisco to Big Sur and on to San Luis Obispo. Over 5–8 days, stop at Bixby Creek Bridge and Hearst Castle. Coastal campsites dot the route, though some tighter sections suit campervans better than larger motorhomes.

The Great Lakes Circuit

500 km 5–8 days

This 500 km route loops from Chicago along the Lake Michigan shoreline through Sleeping Bear Dunes and Traverse City. Allow 5–8 days to enjoy sandy beaches, lighthouses, and lakeside campsites. A motorhome gives you plenty of space for this relaxed USA Midwest adventure.

The Route 66 Classic Tour

900 km 10–15 days

Follow 900 km of the original Route 66 from Amarillo, Texas, through Albuquerque to Flagstaff, Arizona. Over 10–15 days, stop at Cadillac Ranch, the Painted Desert, and Meteor Crater. Wide-open roads and plentiful RV parks make this a comfortable campervan or motorhome journey across the USA.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in USA

The USA has an extensive interstate highway system spanning over 77,000 km, and most routes are toll-free, though turnpikes in states like Florida, Illinois, and the Northeast require payment via cash, card, or electronic passes such as E-ZPass. Speed limits for motorhomes and larger vehicles typically range from 55 to 65 mph (88–105 km/h) on interstates, though this varies by state. Vehicles over 13 feet 6 inches in height should watch for low-clearance bridges, particularly on older parkways. Rest areas with free parking are well spaced along major interstates, and many include dump stations for campervans and motorhomes.

Grazie mille Lorenzo! Alla prossima :)

We travelled through Portugal for two weeks with our family of five. The camper has everything you need, and the air conditioning was a huge plus during the summer. Marcelino always responded quickly and was very helpful whenever we had a question. We had a fantastic trip and highly recommend this camper!

Kevin was so helpful helping John and I embark on our first campervan journey with our dogs travelling the length of France in his lovely converted Boxer van we have all come to love as ''Olive''. The first trip of many our experience was overwhelmingly good. So many amazing places to stop at and amazing views from Blue Lakes , Vast Gorges and amazing views from High Mountain Passes, Olive got us there ! Then when we were all parked up she offered us such a lovely comfy place to spend the night. With mosquito nets and an ambient cooling system in the cab, we took some fans to cope with the ' above 40 degree at times, temperatures but the dogs and us were absolutely fine.. Olive's solar powered appliances really do work all day and through the night. Kevin was an amazing host - even though we 'lost ' his fuel tank cap! Don't ask us how! Id thoroughly recommend Olive to anyone . She is a lovely van and Kevin a great host.
