Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Kent

Kent — a region worth exploring

Kent's White Cliffs of Dover rise 110 metres above the English Channel, forming the first or last sight of Britain for millions of travellers crossing from mainland Europe each year. Known as the Garden of England, this south-eastern county stretches from the Thames Estuary to the Romney Marsh and packs in a remarkable variety of landscapes. Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits roughly 95 km from London, while the medieval harbour town of Sandwich lies just 20 km further east along the coast. Inland, you can explore the orchards and hop gardens of the Weald, wander the grounds of Leeds Castle near Maidstone, or follow the North Downs Way across rolling chalk hills. The 50 km stretch of coastline between Whitstable and Deal offers seaside towns with independent character, fresh oyster stalls, and broad shingle beaches — all easy to reach in a campervan at your own pace. Kent's compact size makes it ideal for shorter touring holidays, yet there is enough variety to fill a fortnight. Narrow lanes through the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty reward patient drivers in smaller campervans, while wider A-roads and motorways suit larger motorhomes heading between major towns. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Kent, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group size and travel style. It is a straightforward, peer-to-peer way to get on the road and discover everything this corner of England has to offer.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Kent, when long daylight hours and warm temperatures make coastal stops and countryside walks a pleasure. The Whitstable Oyster Festival in late July draws food lovers to the north Kent coast, while the Dickens Festival in Rochester each June celebrates the county's literary heritage with costumed parades. Spring brings apple and cherry blossom across the Weald, and autumn rewards with golden hop gardens and quieter campsites. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Kent

Kent's motorway network centres on the M20 and M2, both running from London towards the Channel ports — neither charges tolls for standard vehicles. The Dartford Crossing (M25) does require a Dart Charge payment, which you must settle online by midnight the day after crossing. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. Many rural lanes in the Weald and around Romney Marsh are narrow and winding, so plan routes carefully if you are driving a larger vehicle. Service areas on the M20 at Maidstone and Folkestone offer overnight parking options.

We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️

It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
