Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Finland

Finland — a country worth exploring

Finland stretches across 338,455 square kilometres between the 60th and 70th parallels, making it the northernmost country in the EU and home to over 188,000 lakes. From the capital Helsinki on the southern coast to the Arctic wilderness of Lapland, the country offers an extraordinary range of landscapes for a road trip. The Lakeland region around Savonlinna and its medieval Olavinlinna Castle provides endless waterside routes, while the Turku Archipelago — the world's largest archipelago by island count — connects thousands of islands by ferry and bridge. Helsinki to Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus on the Arctic Circle, covers roughly 830 km, and the drive from Turku to Oulu along the western coast spans around 620 km, giving you a real sense of the country's scale. Finnish roads are well maintained and remarkably quiet outside urban centres, which makes them ideal for larger vehicles. Forests cover about 75 per cent of the land, so you are never far from nature, whether you are parking beside a lake for a morning swim or watching the Northern Lights from a remote clearing. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners spread across Finland's key cities and regions. This peer-to-peer approach means you benefit from personal tips, flexible pick-up points, and a wide choice of vehicles — from compact campervans for couples to spacious motorhomes for families ready to explore Finland at their own pace.

Best time to visit

The best months to hire a campervan in Finland run from late May to September, when daylight hours are generous and temperatures sit comfortably between 15 °C and 25 °C. June brings the Midnight Sun, especially north of the Arctic Circle, giving you almost 24 hours of light for driving and exploring. The Ruisrock festival in Turku each July is one of Europe's oldest rock festivals and a great reason to head west. Autumn in September offers golden forests and fewer fellow travellers on the road. Book early for July and August through Yescapa to lock in the best choice of vehicles from local owners across Finland, and consider shoulder months for more competitive peer-to-peer pricing.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Finland

Finland has no toll roads, so you can travel the entire country without paying any road charges. The national speed limit on motorways is typically 120 km/h for cars, but if your motorhome or campervan exceeds 3,500 kg, the limit drops to 80 km/h on most roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Main highways such as the E75 running north–south are well surfaced and clearly signposted in Finnish and Swedish. Rest areas with waste-disposal points appear regularly along major routes. In Lapland, watch for reindeer on the road — they roam freely and have right of way year-round.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!

Sergey's van is great. Really spacious, easy to drive. We had a great trip. Sergey was really nice helpful and was on hand to help with any questions during the trip. He even gave us a lift to the train station in Ljubljana! Would 100% recommend.
