Why choose Oxford for your road trip

Oxford — a city worth exploring

Oxford's Bodleian Library has been a working library since 1602, making it one of the oldest in Europe and home to over 13 million printed items. The city's 38 colleges form the University of Oxford, and their architecture spans nearly every major English style from the medieval to the modern. You can wander through the covered market on High Street, which has traded since 1774, or visit the Ashmolean Museum, the world's first university museum, opened in 1683. The Pitt Rivers Museum houses over half a million archaeological and ethnographic objects, while Christ Church College doubles as both an academic institution and the city's cathedral. Beyond the dreaming spires, the Thames Path runs right through Oxford, offering peaceful waterside walks. The Cotswolds lie just 40 km to the west, and Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits only 13 km to the north. Oxford's compact centre can feel busy for larger vehicles, but the surrounding countryside opens up with well-connected A-roads and quieter lanes ideal for touring by campervan. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Oxfordshire, giving you the flexibility of a motorhome without the formality of a traditional depot. Whether you want to explore the colleges on foot and retreat to your campervan each evening, or use Oxford as a launchpad for the wider region, the peer-to-peer model means more choice and a more personal start to your trip.

Best time to visit

Oxford is wonderful to visit from late spring through to early autumn. The Oxford Literary Festival in March brings readers and writers to venues across the city, while the May Morning celebrations on 1 May see crowds gather at Magdalen Bridge to hear the college choir sing at dawn. Summer months are ideal for exploring by campervan, with long daylight hours and easy access to surrounding countryside. Booking your Yescapa hire early for July and August is a smart move, as this is the most popular season. September and October reward you with quieter roads and golden light along the Thames Path, perfect for a relaxed motorhome tour of the Cotswolds and beyond.

Where to park your motorhome

Oxford operates a park-and-ride system that works well for larger vehicles, letting you leave your campervan or motorhome on the outskirts and catch a bus into the city centre. Overnight parking in the city itself is restricted for campervans, so using designated facilities is the best approach. Always check height barriers before entering any car park in central Oxford.

  • Redbridge Park and Ride, 4km south — Large car park south of the city with regular bus services into the centre. Suitable for motorhomes and campervans with no height barrier on the main section.
  • Pear Tree Park and Ride, 5km north — Located off the A34 to the north, with frequent buses to the city centre. Open layout accommodates larger vehicles.
  • Seacourt Park and Ride, 3km west — West of the city near Botley Road. Check height restrictions before entry, as some sections have barriers.
  • Oxpens Car Park, 1km southwest — Central car park close to the river. Limited spaces for larger vehicles, but useful for shorter daytime visits.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
