Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Norway

Norway — a country worth exploring

Norway's Atlantic Road, an 8.3-kilometre stretch of highway connecting islands across the open sea, has been voted the world's best road trip route multiple times. This is a country built for exploration by road, where deep fjords carve into mountainous coastlines and vast Arctic plateaus stretch towards the midnight sun. From the Lofoten archipelago's dramatic peaks to the Geirangerfjord's UNESCO-listed waters, Norway rewards those who take their time. The distance from Bergen to Tromsø covers roughly 1,600 km by road, passing through landscapes that shift from lush western fjordlands to the sparse beauty of the Arctic north. Oslo to Stavanger, meanwhile, is around 460 km — a route that takes you past the famous Preikestolen cliff, towering 604 metres above the Lysefjord. Norway's well-maintained network of scenic routes, many with dedicated rest areas designed by acclaimed architects, makes it particularly well suited to campervan and motorhome travel. Freedom camping is supported by the allemannsretten (right to roam), allowing you to park overnight in many rural spots. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Norway, giving you the flexibility to start your journey from cities like Oslo, Bergen, or Tromsø. Whether you are drawn to the northern lights in winter or the endless daylight of a Norwegian summer, the open road here delivers something extraordinary at every turn.

Best time to visit

Norway's peak season runs from June to August, when mountain passes are fully open and you can experience the midnight sun north of the Arctic Circle. The Bergen International Festival in May and June brings world-class music and theatre to Norway's western capital. For northern lights, plan a campervan trip between October and March — Tromsø is one of the best spots in Norway to witness them. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find competitive hire prices outside the busy summer months, and shoulder seasons like May or September offer quieter roads and open campsites with fewer crowds. Book early for July, as it is the most popular month for motorhome travel across Norway.

The best road trips in Norway

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Bergen Fjord Drive

250 km 3–6 days

This 250 km route loops from Bergen through Hardangerfjord and Voss, passing orchards, waterfalls, and the Steindalsfossen waterfall you can walk behind. Ideal for campervans on Norway's well-signed scenic roads.

The Lofoten Island Loop

280 km 3–6 days

Covering 280 km across Norway's Lofoten archipelago, drive from Svolvær to Å through fishing villages like Henningsvær and Reine. Compact campervans work best on the narrow island roads. Allow time for hiking and beaches.

The Stavanger to Ålesund Coastal Route

450 km 5–8 days

A 450 km journey along Norway's western coast, linking Stavanger, Haugesund, and Ålesund via ferries and coastal roads. Stop at Preikestolen for the famous cliff walk. Motorhomes and campervans both suit this route, with regular campsites along the way.

The Geirangerfjord Circuit

400 km 5–8 days

This 400 km circuit from Ålesund takes in the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, the Trollstigen mountain road, and Dalsnibba viewpoint at 1,500 metres. Norway's scenic route signage guides you throughout. Best suited to mid-sized motorhomes.

Arctic Norway: Tromsø to the North Cape

700 km 7–11 days

Drive 700 km from Tromsø to Nordkapp, Europe's northernmost point, through Finnmark's open tundra and Sámi heartland. Norway's Arctic roads are well maintained in summer. A motorhome with good insulation is recommended for cooler evenings.

The Southern Norway Grand Loop

600 km 7–15 days

A 600 km loop from Oslo through Kristiansand and Telemark, taking in the Setesdal valley, Lindesnes lighthouse, and the Telemark Canal. Norway's south offers gentler terrain, making it perfect for first-time campervan travellers.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Norway

Norway has no general motorway tolls, but many roads, bridges, and tunnels use an AutoPASS electronic toll system — you pass through without stopping and are billed automatically. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are typically 80 km/h on main roads and 60 km/h in built-up areas. Many of Norway's roads are narrow and winding, particularly along fjord routes and mountain passes. Some tunnels have height restrictions, so check your vehicle dimensions before setting off. Winter tyres are compulsory from November to April, and certain mountain roads close seasonally.
