Why choose Bicester for your road trip

Bicester — a city worth exploring

Bicester's clock tower at the heart of Market Square has marked the hours since 1838, standing as a reminder of this Oxfordshire market town's long trading heritage. Just 20 km north-east of Oxford, Bicester offers a compelling mix of history, shopping, and countryside access that makes it an ideal base for exploring the region. Bicester Village, the designer outlet destination, draws visitors from across the country, while the town's older quarters reveal medieval churches and charming lanes worth a wander. St Edburg's Church dates back to the 12th century and sits quietly among the town's residential streets. For military history enthusiasts, the Bicester Heritage site occupies a former RAF bomber station and hosts regular Sunday Scramble motoring events throughout the year. Garth Park provides green space for families, with a playground, skate park, and open fields beside the River Bure. The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty begins roughly 25 km to the west, offering rolling hills and honey-coloured villages perfect for a longer drive. Roads around Bicester are well suited to larger vehicles, with good dual carriageway access via the A41 and the M40 motorway nearby. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the area, giving you the freedom to set your own pace and explore Oxfordshire's countryside without the formality of a traditional depot. It is a practical, personal way to travel from Bicester and beyond.

Best time to visit

Bicester is enjoyable year-round, with each season offering something different. The Bicester Heritage Sunday Scramble events run from spring through autumn, drawing classic car fans to the former airfield. Summer months are ideal for campervan trips into the Cotswolds and surrounding countryside, with long daylight hours and warm conditions for outdoor stops. Booking your vehicle through Yescapa ahead of the summer period is a smart move, as peer-to-peer hire often provides better value than traditional options. Autumn brings golden colours to the Oxfordshire lanes, and the quieter roads make for relaxed motorhome touring. Winter visits suit those keen on Bicester Village shopping and cosy pub stops in nearby villages.
