Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Croatia

Croatia — a country worth exploring

Croatia's Adriatic coastline stretches over 1,770 kilometres, dotted with more than 1,200 islands and islets — only around 50 of which are permanently inhabited. From the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik in the south to the Roman amphitheatre in Pula at the tip of the Istrian Peninsula, the country packs an extraordinary range of history and landscape into a compact area. The drive from Zagreb to Split covers roughly 410 km, taking you from the continental capital through the karst wonderland of Plitvice Lakes National Park before descending to the Dalmatian coast. Heading further south, Split to Dubrovnik is about 230 km along the spectacular coastal road, with ferry ports linking the mainland to islands such as Hvar and Korčula. Inland, the rolling hills of Zagorje and the wetlands of Kopački Rit Nature Park near Osijek offer a quieter side of Croatia that rewards slower exploration. Coastal roads are well maintained and suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes, while the network of campsites along the shore makes overnight stops straightforward. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners based across Croatia, giving you a wide choice of campervans and vehicles to match your group size, budget, and itinerary — whether you want a quick coastal loop or a full cross-country adventure.

Best time to visit

Croatia's camping season runs from April through to October, with each month offering something different. May and June bring warm, settled weather ideal for exploring by campervan before the busiest weeks arrive. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival fills the old town with open-air theatre and music from mid-July to late August, while the Motovun Film Festival in Istria each July is a fantastic stop on any road trip. September and early October are excellent for quieter roads and comfortable temperatures along the coast. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find better-value hire outside peak season, and booking a few weeks ahead gives you the widest choice of vehicles.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Croatia

Croatia uses a modern motorway network with toll roads on major routes such as the A1 from Zagreb to Split. You pay tolls at booths using cash, card, or an ENC electronic tag. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are generally 80 km/h on open roads and 110 km/h on motorways, while vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits. Headlights must be on at all times from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March. Rest areas with fuel, parking, and basic facilities appear regularly along the A1 and A6 corridors, making long drives manageable in a campervan or motorhome.

An absolute 10/10 experience from start to finish! The owners were exceptionally professional, super friendly, and made everything from initial contact to booking and collection completely seamless. Meeting their beloved camper van, 'Olaf,' was the highlight of our trip. As first-time drivers of anything larger than an SUV, we were initially nervous, but Olaf completely surprised us—being fully automatic and featuring Android Auto infotainment system, he was an absolute breeze to drive and got us to our destinations hassle-free. The camper is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a short getaway, and honestly, you could easily stay much longer. If we ever find ourselves back in France, we would love to take Olaf out for another spin!

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
