Portugal's coastline stretches over 1,794 kilometres from the surf beaches of the Algarve to the wild Atlantic shores of the Minho, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore by road. From Lisbon, you can reach Porto in around 310 km heading north along the A1 motorway, or drive 280 km south-east to the walled town of Évora in the heart of the Alentejo. Along the way, landmarks such as the Tower of Belém, the Pena Palace in Sintra, the Douro Valley's terraced vineyards and the Roman Temple of Évora give every stretch of tarmac a reason to stop. The country's compact size means you can combine coastal drives, mountain passes through the Serra da Estrela — mainland Portugal's highest range — and riverside routes without ever spending too long behind the wheel. Narrow roads in historic centres are easy to navigate in a campervan, while wider motorways suit larger motorhomes heading between regions. Whether you fancy Atlantic sunsets from a clifftop pitch or mornings beside a vineyard, Portugal rewards those who travel at their own pace. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners spread across the country, giving you flexible pick-up points and a choice of vehicles that suits your itinerary rather than a fixed depot schedule.
Portugal's long season runs from April through to October, with spring ideal for wildflower displays across the Alentejo and comfortable driving temperatures. June is festival season — the Festas de Santo António light up Lisbon from the 12th, filling neighbourhoods with music and grilled sardines. Autumn brings the Douro grape harvest, when you can park up near Peso da Régua and watch the vindima unfold. Campsites along the coast stay open year-round in the Algarve, so winter trips are perfectly doable. Book through Yescapa outside peak summer months and you often benefit from lower peer-to-peer hire rates set by owners themselves.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 350 km route winds from Porto into the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, passing Peso da Régua and Pinhão before climbing into the remote highlands of Trás-os-Montes around Bragança. Allow 5–8 days to enjoy wine tastings and mountain scenery suited to campervans.
Covering 400 km, this route links Peniche's surf beaches to the university city of Coimbra via Óbidos and the Monastery of Batalha. Over 5–8 days you can explore Portugal's Silver Coast in a motorhome, with well-equipped campsites dotted along the way.
A 600 km journey from Faro in the south to Porto in the north, taking in Évora's Roman heritage and the Serra da Estrela mountains. Plan 7–11 days for this full Portugal experience — ideal in a motorhome with plenty of service stops on the A1 corridor.
Explore 550 km of northern Portugal over 7–15 days, from the granite streets of Guimarães to the Peneda-Gerês National Park and the Minho river border. Campervan-friendly roads lead through Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima, with riverside pitches throughout.
A compact 200 km drive along Portugal's southern coast from Lagos to Tavira, passing the sea caves of Benagil and the lagoons of Ria Formosa. Three to six days is ideal, with coastal campsites offering full hook-ups for campervans and motorhomes.
This 250 km loop from Évora circles through Monsaraz, Marvão and the cork oak landscapes of Portugal's Alentejo region. Allow 3–6 days to savour slow-paced villages, dark-sky reserves and quiet campsites perfect for a campervan escape.

Portugal offers a wide spread of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes, from Atlantic-facing pitches in the Algarve to forested mountain sites in central Portugal. Many parks provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, laundry facilities and dedicated motorhome service points. Coastal sites tend to fill first in summer, so booking ahead is worthwhile, while inland parks in the Alentejo and the north often have space year-round.
Portugal operates a toll motorway network managed through electronic systems. Many routes use Via Verde electronic tolling, and some sections are exclusively electronic with no cash booths — you can purchase a temporary transponder at border crossings or post offices. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on main roads, lower than the standard car limits. The A22 across the Algarve and the A25 inland are fully electronic toll roads, so plan ahead. Rest areas with services appear regularly on major routes like the A1 between Lisbon and Porto.
Esperienza positiva
Beyond happy with the whole experience. The motorhome was very comfy and had everything we needed for our little girls camping trip. More importantly the owners were extremely friendly and beyond helpful at all times with the vehicle, the routes, the airport pickups and dropp offs and many many more things! All and all very happy with this experience!
The experience was seemles from start to finish. Handover was very straightforward with all the major information required exchanged. Fabian the owner remained available during the trip for any issues that may arise. The vehicle was as advertised and in very good condition. Very nice camping caravan, equipped with everything that you could need. The return process was straightforward when returning vehicle. Also my car was kept securley stored at the location for arrival and drop off. Overall very good experience and i would highly recommend and use again in the future.
We really enjoyed our travels around Brittany in Clarisse's camper van. It was comfortable and easy to drive and had everything we needed for our holiday. Clarisse explained everything clearly to us before we set off.
A really positive experience from start to finish.
