Why choose Southampton for your road trip

Southampton — a city worth exploring

Southampton's medieval city walls stretch for over 1.2 kilometres, making them among the best-preserved in England and a reminder of the port city's centuries-old maritime heritage. From the SeaCity Museum, which tells the story of the Titanic's fateful 1912 departure from these very docks, to the Tudor House and Garden dating back to the twelfth century, history is woven into every street. The Bargate, a grand medieval gatehouse at the heart of the old town, stands as the city's most recognisable landmark. For green space, Southampton Common covers 148 hectares of open parkland ideal for a morning stroll before hitting the road. Winchester, the ancient capital of England, lies just 20 km to the north, while the wild heathlands and ancient woodlands of the New Forest National Park begin only 12 km to the west — both are easy day trips in a campervan. Southampton's position on the Solent coast means flat, well-connected roads and straightforward access to the M27 and M3 motorways, making it a superb base for motorhome touring along the south coast. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners in and around Southampton, which means flexible pick-up points, personal tips on the best routes, and peer-to-peer pricing that keeps your holiday budget in check.

Best time to visit

Southampton shines from May to September, when long daylight hours make coastal drives a pleasure. The Southampton Boat Show in September draws visitors from across the country and is a fantastic event to combine with a campervan trip along the Solent. In summer, the city hosts Let's Rock Southampton, a retro music festival in the Common each July. Book your Yescapa motorhome early for the peak summer months to lock in the widest choice of vehicles and competitive peer-to-peer rates. Autumn and spring bring quieter campsites and mild conditions perfect for exploring the New Forest without the crowds.

Top getaways from Southampton

Southampton is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Southampton to the New Forest

25km west 1–4 days

Just 25 km west of Southampton, the New Forest National Park is perfect for a short campervan escape. Wander among free-roaming ponies at Lyndhurst, then cycle the trails around Brockenhurst. Campsites with electric hook-ups are plentiful, so you can settle in and explore at your own pace.

Southampton to Portsmouth

40km east 1–3 days

Head 40 km east from Southampton to Portsmouth, home to the Historic Dockyard and HMS Victory. Stroll along Southsea seafront for fish and chips with a view of the Solent. Parking near the waterfront suits smaller campervans, so check height barriers before you arrive.

Southampton to the Jurassic Coast

120km southwest 3–6 days

Drive 120 km south-west from Southampton to reach the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore Durdle Door's iconic limestone arch and hunt for fossils on Lyme Regis beach. Motorhome-friendly car parks at Lulworth Cove make stopping along this dramatic coastline straightforward.

Southampton to the Cotswolds

150km north 3–6 days

Travel 150 km north from Southampton into the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. Visit honey-stone villages like Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold, then sample local produce at a farm shop. Roads can be narrow in places, so a compact campervan is ideal for navigating the lanes.

Southampton to Cornwall

210km west 5–8 days

Set off 210 km west from Southampton towards Cornwall for surf, cream teas, and rugged clifftop walks. St Ives offers golden beaches, while the Eden Project near St Austell is a must-see. Plan your motorhome pitches in advance during summer to secure the best coastal spots.

Southampton to Wales

280km northwest 5–8 days

Cover 280 km north-west from Southampton to discover the Brecon Beacons and the Welsh coastline. Hike Pen y Fan for panoramic views, then head to Tenby for colourful harbour-side charm. Campervan service points are well signposted along the M4 corridor, keeping your journey hassle-free.

Where to park your motorhome

Southampton has several car parks that can accommodate larger vehicles, though it is worth checking height and length restrictions before you set off. Overnight parking in a motorhome or campervan on public streets is generally not permitted in the city centre. Always look for dedicated bays or out-of-centre car parks with generous clearance. Arrive early during weekends and cruise-ship days, when spaces fill up quickly.

  • West Quay Watermark Car Park, Adjacent to the city — Multi-storey car park in the city centre near West Quay shopping centre. Check height restrictions — best suited to smaller campervans only.
  • Southampton Common Car Park, 1km north — Surface-level car park on the edge of Southampton Common with more generous height clearance, handy for a walk through the park before heading out.
  • Mayflower Park Car Park, 1km south — Open-air car park beside the waterfront with views of the docks. Suitable for motorhomes on quieter days; pay-and-display charges apply.

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
