Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Hampshire

Hampshire — a region worth exploring

Hampshire's New Forest National Park covers 566 square kilometres of ancient woodland, open heathland and free-roaming ponies, making it one of the most rewarding regions in southern England to explore by road. From the maritime heritage of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard — home to HMS Victory and the Mary Rose — to the elegant streets of Winchester, England's former medieval capital, there is a rich mix of history and landscape packed into a single county. The distance from Winchester to Southampton is just 19 km, while Portsmouth to the western edge of the New Forest at Fordingbridge stretches roughly 65 km, so you can cover a great deal without long drives. Along the way you will find the Watercress Line heritage railway near Alresford, the Iron Age hill fort at Danebury, and the Solent coastline with its sailing harbours and shingle beaches. Hampshire's roads range from wide dual carriageways to narrow forest lanes where ponies and cattle have right of way, so choosing the right vehicle matters. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Hampshire, giving you the flexibility to pick up close to your starting point and set off at your own pace. Whether you want a compact campervan for forest tracks or a larger motorhome for a family coastal tour, the peer-to-peer model means more choice and often better value than traditional hire.

Best time to visit

Hampshire is enjoyable from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring wildflower displays across the New Forest, while the Southampton Boat Show in September draws visitors to the waterfront. Summer months offer the longest daylight hours for coastal walks and cycling, and campsites across the county are fully open with all facilities running. Booking your campervan through Yescapa outside the peak July–August window can unlock better rates thanks to flexible peer-to-peer pricing. Autumn in Hampshire is particularly rewarding, with deer rutting season in the New Forest and harvest festivals in the Test Valley villages.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Hampshire

Hampshire is well connected by the M3 linking London to Southampton and the M27 running east–west between Portsmouth and the New Forest. Neither motorway charges tolls, so you can travel freely. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways — keep an eye on signage near the New Forest, where limits drop to 40 mph to protect free-roaming animals. Rest areas and services are plentiful along the M3, including Fleet Services. Narrower lanes in the forest and rural Test Valley require extra care with larger vehicles.

I highly recommend renting from Handy! The camper van was absolute perfection for our family road trip with two young children, and its condition was top-notch. At pickup, Handy was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating, taking the time to explain all the various systems and how to best operate the vehicle. He was also super responsive and helpful whenever I had quick questions during our trip. I couldn't have asked for a better host or vehicle. Thank you, Handy!
