Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire — a region worth exploring

Oxfordshire's dreaming spires begin with the University of Oxford, founded in 1096 and recognised as the oldest university in the English-speaking world, making the county a living timeline of over nine centuries of scholarship and architecture. From the honey-coloured limestone villages of the Cotswolds in the west to the gentle chalk downs of the Chiltern Hills in the east, Oxfordshire covers roughly 1,006 square miles of varied countryside that rewards slow, unhurried exploration. The distance from Oxford city centre to Blenheim Palace in Woodstock is just 13 km, while the market town of Henley-on-Thames sits around 37 km to the south-east, giving you a compact yet richly layered touring area. Along the way you can follow the Thames Path through meadows and lock-keeper's cottages, wander the ancient Ridgeway trail across the North Wessex Downs, or browse the independent shops of Burford and Witney. Oxfordshire's mix of narrow lanes, waterside pitches, and rural stopovers makes it particularly well suited to campervan travel, and a motorhome gives you the freedom to linger wherever the landscape calls. Through Yescapa you hire directly from local owners based across Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties, choosing from a wide range of campervans and vehicles to match your group size, budget, and itinerary — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps costs fair and puts genuine local knowledge at your fingertips.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Oxfordshire, when long daylight hours open up the Cotswolds and Thames Valley at their best. Book around the Henley Royal Regatta in late June and early July for riverside atmosphere, or time your visit for the Blenheim Palace Flower Show each June. Autumn brings golden colours to the Chiltern beechwoods, and winter weekends suit cosy pub-hopping between market towns. Campsites across Oxfordshire tend to fill quickly in July and August, so planning ahead pays off. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find competitive hire rates outside peak months, giving you more flexibility to explore at your own pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire sits at the crossroads of several major routes: the M40 links London to Birmingham and passes through the east of the county, while the A34 runs north–south connecting the Midlands to the south coast. Neither the M40 nor the A34 charges tolls. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. Many Cotswold lanes are narrow with passing places, so a smaller campervan can be easier to manoeuvre in the west of the county. Motorway services at Oxford and Cherwell Valley offer dedicated motorhome parking bays.

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!

Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
