Hastings sits on the East Sussex coast where the famous Battle of 1066 took place just 10 km inland at Battle Abbey, a site that reshaped English history forever. The Old Town, tucked between the sandstone cliffs of East Hill and West Hill, is home to the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe, with its distinctive net shops — tall black wooden sheds built to store fishing nets — lining the Stade. You can ride the East Hill Cliff Railway, the steepest funicular in the country, for sweeping views across the English Channel. Hastings Contemporary, the seafront gallery reopened in 2019, showcases modern and contemporary art with the sea as its backdrop. A short walk along the promenade brings you to Hastings Pier, rebuilt and reopened in 2016 after a devastating fire. Eastbourne is just 27 km to the west along the coast, while Rye, one of England's best-preserved medieval towns, lies 19 km to the northeast. The coastal roads here are well suited to campervans, with wide routes connecting seaside towns and the rolling South Downs just behind. Narrow lanes in the Old Town can be tricky for larger motorhome models, so plan your route through the newer parts of town. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners in the area, giving you the flexibility to explore this stretch of the Sussex and Kent coastline at your own pace.
Hastings comes alive in late summer, with the Hastings Old Town Carnival Week in August drawing crowds for processions, live music, and bonfire celebrations. The town also hosts Jack in the Green each May, a colourful folk festival marking the start of summer. For a quieter campervan trip with mild weather and easier parking near the seafront, May and September are ideal months. Peak season runs from July to August, so booking your hire through Yescapa ahead of time helps you secure the best choice from local owners at fair peer-to-peer prices. Autumn brings the famous Hastings Bonfire celebrations in October, well worth timing your visit around.
Hastings is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 27 km west along the coast to Eastbourne, passing through Bexhill-on-Sea and its De La Warr Pavilion. In Eastbourne, walk the clifftop path to Beachy Head for dramatic chalk cliff views. Campervan parking is available at the seafront car parks, and several sites nearby welcome overnight stays.
Drive 19 km northeast from Hastings to the medieval hilltop town of Rye. Wander the cobbled Mermaid Street, visit Lamb House, and explore Rye Castle Museum. Nearby Camber Sands offers a wide sandy beach with motorhome-friendly parking areas just behind the dunes.
Follow the coast 105 km west to Brighton, stopping at Pevensey Castle and the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs along the way. In Brighton, explore the Royal Pavilion and the North Laine quarter. Campervan pitches are available at sites on the outskirts, with regular buses into the centre.
Travel 140 km northeast through the Kent countryside to Canterbury. Visit the UNESCO-listed Canterbury Cathedral and stroll along the River Stour. Stop at Tenterden and its Kent & East Sussex Railway en route. Several well-equipped campsites sit within easy reach of the city walls.
Head 210 km west from Hastings to the New Forest, crossing through the South Downs National Park. Explore Lyndhurst, the forest's capital, and cycle the car-free trails. Wild ponies roam freely here. Campervan-friendly sites with hook-ups are plentiful across the forest.
Drive 250 km southwest from Hastings to Dorset's Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, and the fossil beaches at Charmouth. The coastal roads are well maintained and several clifftop campsites offer pitches with sea views.

Hastings and the surrounding East Sussex countryside offer a good range of campsites for both campervans and motorhomes. Coastal sites give you easy access to the beach, while inland options sit among the rolling hills of the High Weald. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, toilet and shower blocks, and hardstanding pitches suitable for larger vehicles. Several welcome dogs and families alike, making this part of the coast a great base for exploring.
Hastings offers several parking options for larger vehicles, though spaces in the Old Town are limited. The seafront car parks along the A259 accommodate campervans during the day, but overnight stays are generally not permitted in council-run car parks. For overnight parking, dedicated campsites or aires nearby are your best option. Always check height barriers before entering multi-storey facilities.
We rented Jorge’s lovely caravan for four days as a mother and daughter trip to celebrate a 55th birthday. It was our first caravan experience, and we honestly loved it! Jorge offers several convenient extras for a small fee, including airport transfers, cleaning. Despite our late-night flight from London, he met us on arrival, gave us a thorough tour of the caravan, and even suggested we record it on our phones, which proved very helpful. A bottle of cold water waiting in the fridge was such a thoughtful touch. After arriving at 1 am in 34°C heat with no open shops nearby, it was a huge relief. We had a small issue with the fridge and also opening the water refill cap, but Jorge happily helped us over a video call. We never felt abandoned - he was always kind, responsive, and professional. The caravan is practical, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Our deposit was also returned promptly. Thank you, Jorge, for making our first caravan holiday such a great experience and sorry about the hard to reach sauce spillage again!
This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!
First time ever in a camper van abroad, have to say Diego was a great guy, helpful before our visit, during and made sure everything was smooth sailing/camping, thanks for ramming my sons first camping trip a succcess! R
Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.
Our trip was truly amazing! The campervan had everything we needed and our host was super kind and helpful :)
Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!
