Why choose Crawley for your road trip

Crawley — a city worth exploring

Crawley sits just 2 km from Gatwick Airport, making it one of the best-connected towns in the south-east of England for setting off on a road trip. Originally a small market town, Crawley was designated a New Town in 1947 and has since grown into a lively hub with distinct neighbourhoods and plenty of green space. Tilgate Park covers over 80 hectares of woodland, lakes and gardens, including the impressive Tilgate Nature Centre where you can meet otters, red pandas and wallabies. For a dose of history, Crawley Museum on the High Street traces the town's story from its medieval origins. Worth Way, a traffic-free path following a disused railway line, stretches 11 km eastward to East Grinstead and is ideal for a leisurely cycle or walk. Brighton lies just 45 km to the south, while the market town of Horsham is only 16 km to the west, giving you easy access to the South Downs and the Weald. The surrounding roads are well suited to larger vehicles, with wide dual carriageways connecting you to the M23 and A23. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Crawley area, which means flexible pick-up times and genuine tips on the best routes south to the coast or north into the Surrey Hills.

Best time to visit

Crawley is a great base year-round thanks to its central location near the South Downs and the coast. The Crawley Festival, usually held each June, fills the town centre with live music, food stalls and family activities. In December, the Tilgate Park winter events bring festive cheer with seasonal markets and light trails. Summer is the busiest period for campervan travel along the south coast, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead helps you secure the best choice. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for exploring nearby countryside routes with quieter campsites and mild driving conditions. Hiring a motorhome in the off-peak months also means more competitive pricing through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform.

Where to park your motorhome

For longer stays, nearby campsites are the most comfortable option.

  • Tilgate Park Car Park, 3km south — Large car park with generous bays near Tilgate Nature Centre. Open during park hours, no overnight stays permitted.
  • County Mall Car Park, Adjacent to the city — Multi-storey car park in the town centre with a 2.1 m height barrier, unsuitable for most motorhomes but fine for smaller campervans.
  • Manor Royal Business District Parking, 3km north — On-street and surface parking available in the business district, generally quieter at weekends. Check signage for restrictions.
  • Gatwick Airport Long Stay Parking, 4km north — Open-air parking with no height restrictions. Useful for short-term stops but charges apply and overnight stays are not intended.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Crawley

We have just returned from our 11 day trip in Jean’s fantastic camper van. Thanks to Jean and Emma’s good English the whole experience was very easy and relaxed. The van had everything we needed for our trip, touring parts of Germany, Austria, and France. As newcomers to camper van life we learned so much and were able to camp without the need to plug in to electric for days on end thanks to the great solar and battery system on the van and the on board water and waste tanks. Many thanks for a great holiday Jean and family! Thanks from Gareth & Samantha!

Thank you for an amazing holiday. We can't recommend this van enough. From the very first communication everything was 100%. The van was clean and had everything we needed for a three week trip. Everything was explained in detail and we were given advice and ideas for places to visit. We will be back again.

Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Thank you!
