Why hire a campervan or motorhome in France

France — a country worth exploring

France's Route Nationale 7 once carried holidaymakers over 1,000 km from Paris to the Mediterranean, and today much of that legendary road remains a favourite among touring enthusiasts. From the chalk cliffs of Étretat on the Normandy coast to the turquoise calanques near Marseille, the country packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a single journey. Paris to Lyon is roughly 465 km, while Lyon to Nice covers about 470 km — distances that feel perfectly paced when you can pull over at a vineyard or lakeside aire along the way. Iconic landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel, the Pont du Gard aqueduct, the lavender fields of the Valensole Plateau and the medieval citadel of Carcassonne give every route its own character. Coastal stretches in Brittany and the Basque Country suit compact campervans, while the broad autoroutes and spacious aires of the Loire Valley are ideal for larger motorhomes. Mountain passes in the Alps and Pyrenees add drama without difficulty for well-prepared travellers. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners spread right across France, so you can pick up a campervan close to your starting point — whether that is Bordeaux, Strasbourg or Toulouse — and set off without a long transfer. The peer-to-peer model means a wider choice of vehicles and often more competitive rates than traditional hire companies, making France one of the most rewarding countries to explore on four wheels.

Best time to visit

France is wonderful for a campervan trip from late April right through to October. The Fête de la Musique on 21 June fills every town square with free concerts, while the Tour de France in July lets you watch the peloton from your motorhome parked roadside in the Alps or Pyrenees. Spring and early autumn bring quieter roads and wide campsite availability, and Yescapa's peer-to-peer pricing often drops outside the peak summer weeks. Book by March for July and August departures to secure the best choice of vehicles across France.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in France

France operates an extensive toll motorway network. Most autoroutes use a ticket system — collect a ticket at the péage booth on entry and pay on exit by card or cash. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes fall into a higher toll category (Class 3) and pay more than standard vehicles. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are 130 km/h on autoroutes and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads; vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 110 km/h on autoroutes. Rest areas with free overnight parking (aires) appear roughly every 20–30 km on major routes, many with water and waste facilities.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in France

An absolute 10/10 experience from start to finish! The owners were exceptionally professional, super friendly, and made everything from initial contact to booking and collection completely seamless. Meeting their beloved camper van, 'Olaf,' was the highlight of our trip. As first-time drivers of anything larger than an SUV, we were initially nervous, but Olaf completely surprised us—being fully automatic and featuring Android Auto infotainment system, he was an absolute breeze to drive and got us to our destinations hassle-free. The camper is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a short getaway, and honestly, you could easily stay much longer. If we ever find ourselves back in France, we would love to take Olaf out for another spin!

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
