West Dunbartonshire sits at the confluence of the River Leven and the River Clyde, home to the Titan Crane in Clydebank — one of only a handful of giant cantilever cranes still standing in the world. Despite covering just 159 square kilometres, this compact council area packs in remarkable variety, from the southern shores of Loch Lomond at Balloch to the urban heritage of Dumbarton and its medieval castle perched atop a volcanic rock. Dumbarton Castle, with origins stretching back over 1,500 years, is one of the longest continuously fortified sites in Britain. The drive from Clydebank to Balloch is roughly 16 kilometres, while Dumbarton to Alexandria covers just 5 kilometres, making West Dunbartonshire wonderfully easy to explore at a relaxed pace. The Leven Valley follows the river northward through wooded parkland, and the lochside at Balloch Country Park offers open green space right on the water's edge. For those arriving by campervan, the A82 provides a direct route through the area and onward into the Highlands, while quieter roads along the Clyde estuary reward slower exploration. A motorhome gives you the flexibility to linger at Loch Lomond Shores, a visitor centre with walking trails and boat trips, before heading into the surrounding countryside. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles suited to both lochside touring and longer Highland adventures.
West Dunbartonshire is enjoyable from spring through to autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and quieter roads, ideal for campervan touring around Loch Lomond. The Loch Lomond Highland Games, typically held in July at Balloch, offer a fantastic chance to experience traditional Scottish culture up close. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your Yescapa hire early ensures the best choice of vehicles. September and October reward visitors with rich autumn colours along the Leven Valley. Even outside peak months, West Dunbartonshire's mild western climate keeps conditions comfortable for motorhome travel.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Inland sites near Dumbarton and the Leven Valley provide convenient bases with shower blocks and laundry rooms, while larger parks closer to Balloch cater for families with play areas and on-site shops.
West Dunbartonshire is served by the A82, the main route connecting Glasgow to the Highlands, which passes through Dumbarton and along the western shore of Loch Lomond. There are no toll roads in the area. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. The A82 can be busy during peak travel times, particularly near Dumbarton. The A814 runs along the Clyde estuary through Clydebank and offers a scenic alternative. Rest areas and laybys are available along the A82 north of Dumbarton, useful for larger vehicles needing a break.

Fabian the owner remained available during the trip for any issues that may arise. The vehicle was as advertised and in very good condition. Very nice camping caravan, equipped with everything that you could need. The return process was straightforward when returning vehicle. We really enjoyed our travels around Brittany in Clarisse's camper van. It was comfortable and easy to drive and had everything we needed for our holiday. Clarisse explained everything clearly to us before we set off.
A really positive experience from start to finish.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
