Why choose Fort William for your road trip

Fort William — a city worth exploring

Fort William sits at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the British Isles at 1,345 metres, making it a natural base for exploring the Scottish Highlands. The town stretches along the shores of Loch Linnhe, where the Great Glen meets the western coast, and its compact centre is easy to navigate on foot. You can visit the West Highland Museum on Cameron Square to learn about Jacobite history, or take the Jacobite Steam Train — famously featured as the Hogwarts Express — across the Glenfinnan Viaduct. The Nevis Range Mountain Experience, just 11 km north-east, offers gondola rides with panoramic views, while Neptune's Staircase at Banavie, 3 km north, is an impressive flight of eight canal locks on the Caledonian Canal. Glencoe lies 26 km south, and the Isle of Skye is roughly 110 km to the north-west, both reachable along well-maintained A-roads suited to larger vehicles. The surrounding landscape of lochs, glens and mountains rewards slow travel, and single-track roads in remoter areas add character to any journey. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Highlands, giving you the freedom to set your own pace and discover Fort William and its surroundings without rigid schedules. Peer-to-peer hire means a wider choice of vehicles and often more flexible pick-up arrangements than traditional outlets.

Best time to visit

Fort William welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering something different. The Fort William Mountain Festival in February draws outdoor enthusiasts for talks, films and guided walks, while the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Nevis Range in June brings international excitement. Summer months from June to August provide the longest daylight hours, ideal for campervan touring along the scenic A82 and A830. Booking your motorhome early through Yescapa for summer ensures the best selection from local owners. Autumn colours around Loch Linnhe and Glen Nevis are spectacular from September to October, and quieter campsites mean a more relaxed experience in Fort William.

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
