Why hire a campervan or motorhome in South Lanarkshire

South Lanarkshire — a region worth exploring

South Lanarkshire is home to the Falls of Clyde, a series of four waterfalls on the River Clyde near New Lanark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves one of the most important industrial heritage locations in the world. Stretching from the outskirts of Glasgow southward to the rolling Lowther Hills, South Lanarkshire covers around 1,772 square kilometres of varied terrain. From Hamilton, the council's administrative centre, to the market town of Lanark is roughly 19 miles, while the drive from East Kilbride south to the village of Leadhills — one of the highest settlements in Scotland — spans about 45 miles through increasingly dramatic upland scenery. Chatelherault Country Park near Hamilton offers 500 acres of woodland, gorge walks, and a restored hunting lodge, while Biggar's Gladstone Court Museum brings a Victorian streetscape to life. The Clyde Valley orchards and farm shops make for rewarding stops along the A72, and Tinto Hill provides a manageable summit walk with panoramic views across central Scotland. Touring South Lanarkshire by campervan lets you move easily between urban attractions and quiet countryside, and a motorhome gives you the space to settle in at scenic overnight spots. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group size and travel style — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps costs fair and supports the local community.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for exploring South Lanarkshire by campervan, when longer daylight hours open up the Clyde Valley's walking trails and country parks. The Biggar Little Festival each October draws visitors with music, comedy, and workshops in one of Scotland's most characterful small towns. Campsites across South Lanarkshire generally operate from Easter through to late September, so booking ahead for July and August is wise. Outside peak months, Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices, and quieter roads through the Lowther Hills make autumn a rewarding time to travel by motorhome.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
