Aberdeenshire's coastline stretches for over 165 miles from the Moray Firth to the North Sea, passing through some of Scotland's most dramatic cliff formations and sandy bays. Inland, the region rises towards the Cairngorms National Park, where the River Dee carves through ancient Caledonian pine forests and past Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family's Scottish residence since 1852. From Aberdeen city to Braemar is roughly 93 km, taking you from harbour-front bustle to highland tranquillity, while the 53 km drive north from Aberdeen to the fishing village of Pennan follows a winding coastal road with sweeping sea views. Dunnottar Castle, perched on a rocky headland near Stonehaven, is one of Scotland's most photographed ruins, and the Aberdeenshire Castle Trail links 17 castles across the region, more per acre than anywhere else in the United Kingdom. Craigievar Castle, Fyvie Castle, and the imposing Slains Castle each tell a different chapter of the area's history. For campervan and motorhome travellers, Aberdeenshire offers a rewarding mix of single-track highland roads, well-maintained A-roads, and quieter coastal lanes. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based across Aberdeenshire and the wider north-east, choosing from compact campervans for narrow country lanes or larger motorhomes for families exploring the region at their own pace.
May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Aberdeenshire, when daylight stretches past 10 pm and coastal campsites are fully open. The Braemar Gathering, held on the first Saturday of September, is one of Scotland's oldest highland games and well worth planning around. Spring brings quieter roads and wildflower displays along the Aberdeenshire coastline, while autumn rewards with golden forests in Royal Deeside. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside the July–August peak, and booking a motorhome for late May or early June means more availability at popular stops like Stonehaven and Ballater.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow the coast from Stonehaven north to Fraserburgh, covering around 180 km past Dunnottar Castle, the Bullers of Buchan sea stacks, and the charming harbour at Cruden Bay. Campervan-friendly parking is available at several villages along the route, with fresh seafood at every stop.
Drive 130 km along the A93 from Aberdeen to Braemar through Royal Deeside, stopping at Balmoral Castle and the pretty village of Ballater. This route suits motorhomes well, with wide roads and well-signed campsites nestled among pine forests beside the River Dee.
Loop roughly 300 km through Aberdeenshire's famous Castle Trail, linking Craigievar, Fyvie, and Huntly castles with overnight stops in market towns like Inverurie and Turriff. A campervan is ideal for hopping between sites at your own pace, with plenty of farm shops along the way.
Head 350 km west from Aberdeen through Aberdeenshire into Moray, visiting the whisky distilleries of Speyside and the dolphin-watching spots around Banff and Portsoy. Motorhome pitches are plentiful in this area, and the Speyside Way walking trail offers excellent day hikes.
A 520 km loop from Aberdeen takes in the full sweep of Aberdeenshire, from Stonehaven's coast to the Cairngorms foothills and north to Pennan. Allow a week or more in your campervan to enjoy Loch Muick, Haddo House, and the fishing harbours of the Buchan coast.
Combine Aberdeenshire with the eastern Highlands on this 600 km route, driving from Aberdeen through Braemar into the Cairngorms, north to Inverness, and returning via the Moray coast. Larger motorhomes handle the A-roads comfortably, with campsites at Aviemore, Grantown-on-Spey, and Cullen.

Aberdeenshire offers a wide spread of campsites, from coastal pitches with sea views to sheltered woodland sites in Royal Deeside. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, and waste disposal suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Whether you prefer a spot near the harbour in Stonehaven or a quieter forest setting close to the Cairngorms, you will find well-maintained facilities across the region.
Aberdeenshire's main artery is the A90 dual carriageway connecting Aberdeen to Dundee in the south and Peterhead in the north, with no tolls anywhere in Scotland. Motorhomes and campervans should observe the national speed limit of 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways, though many rural routes have lower advisory limits. The A93 through Royal Deeside and the A947 to Banff are well-surfaced but narrower, so larger motorhomes should allow extra time. Rest areas and laybys are plentiful along the A90, and height barriers are rare outside city-centre car parks.
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had a great experience. All went smoothly and the camper van was perfect. Mike was very accommodating and communicative throughout and we would recommend highly.
Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
