Clackmannanshire holds the distinction of being Scotland's smallest historic county, yet it packs a remarkable amount of character into just 159 square kilometres nestled between the Ochil Hills and the River Forth. The iconic Wallace Monument in Stirling stands just 5 km from the county boundary, while the town of Alloa — Clackmannanshire's administrative centre — sits roughly 58 km from Edinburgh and 37 km from Glasgow, making it an ideal base for exploring central Scotland. You can trace centuries of brewing heritage at Alloa Tower, a beautifully preserved 14th-century tower house managed by the National Trust for Scotland, or follow the Hillfoots Trail through the charming villages of Tillicoultry, Dollar, and Menstrie, each tucked beneath the dramatic Ochil escarpment. Dollar Glen leads walkers up to Castle Campbell, a 15th-century stronghold perched above two gorges with sweeping views across the Forth Valley. For those who prefer two wheels, the Devon Way — a traffic-free path running along a former railway line — is perfect for a leisurely cycle. The county's compact size makes it wonderfully suited to campervan travel, as you can reach every corner without long drives. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across central Scotland, giving you the flexibility to explore Clackmannanshire at your own pace and with a vehicle that suits your group perfectly.
Clackmannanshire is a rewarding destination from spring through to autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and wildflower displays across the Ochil Hills, ideal for campervan trips along the Hillfoots villages. The Alloa Festival of Music, held each March, draws visitors to the town centre, while the Ochil Hills Woodland Park hosts family events throughout the summer months. July and August are the busiest period, so booking your Yescapa campervan early ensures the best choice of vehicles. September and October reward you with rich autumn colour across Dollar Glen and quieter roads for motorhome touring. Campsites in the area generally operate from Easter to October, with several offering year-round pitches.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow the A91 through Clackmannanshire's Hillfoots villages — Menstrie, Alva, Tillicoultry, and Dollar — covering around 85 km. Visit Castle Campbell, explore Dollar Glen, and stop at Alva Glen for waterfall walks. Ideal for a compact campervan trip with plenty of roadside parking.
A 120 km loop from Alloa through Clackmannanshire, crossing the Clackmannanshire Bridge to Culross, then along the Fife coast to Dunfermline before returning north. Take in Culross Palace and Dunfermline Abbey. Well-suited to motorhomes with good road surfaces throughout.
Start in Clackmannanshire and head west to Stirling Castle, then north through Doune and Callander into the Trossachs. Loop back via Loch Earn and Crieff, covering 280 km. Campervan-friendly campsites are plentiful along this route through Scotland's heartland.
A 350 km route linking Clackmannanshire with the East Neuk of Fife. Drive south over the Clackmannanshire Bridge, visit St Andrews and Anstruther, then return via Cupar and the Ochil Hills. Motorhome service points are available at several stops along the way.
Head north from Clackmannanshire through Perth and Pitlochry to Aviemore, covering 480 km. Pass through the Cairngorms National Park before looping back via Aberfeldy and Crieff. A brilliant route for a campervan adventure with wild scenery and well-equipped campsites.
Begin in Clackmannanshire and travel 620 km through Stirling, up to Oban on the west coast, across to Fort William, and south through Glen Coe and Loch Lomond. This extended motorhome journey takes in castles, lochs, and coastal harbours across central and western Scotland.

Clackmannanshire and the surrounding area offer a good selection of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. You will find sites with electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, and modern shower blocks, many set against the backdrop of the Ochil Hills. From riverside spots near Alloa to woodland settings closer to Stirling, there is a pitch to match every style of trip. Several sites welcome seasonal and overnight visitors alike, with waste disposal and fresh water points for self-contained vehicles.
Clackmannanshire is well connected by the A91, which runs east to west through the Hillfoots villages, and the A907 linking Alloa to the M9 motorway. Scotland has no motorway tolls, so you can travel freely in your motorhome or campervan. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Roads through the Ochil Hills can be narrow and winding, so take care with larger vehicles. The Clackmannanshire Bridge over the Forth provides a direct route south towards Dunfermline and the M90, making it easy to connect with Edinburgh or the Highlands.
We hired the van for 8 nights and it was perfect. Went up to the mountains and down to the beach. It was very spacious and well kitted out. The owners are also lovely, accommodating and quick to reply to our message

Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
