Edinburgh's Royal Mile stretches exactly one Scots mile — 1.81 km — from the Castle perched on its volcanic plug down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the King's official Scottish residence. The city's Old and New Towns together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a remarkable contrast between medieval closes and elegant Georgian crescents. You can climb Arthur's Seat, the 251-metre peak of an ancient volcano right in the city centre, for sweeping views across the Firth of Forth. The Scottish National Gallery on The Mound houses works by Raeburn, Ramsay and Monet, while the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, roughly 1.5 km north of Princes Street, is one of the finest in the world. Glasgow sits just 74 km to the west along the M8, and the coastal town of North Berwick is only 40 km east, making Edinburgh an ideal base for day trips by campervan. The city's layout rewards those who explore on foot, but its surrounding roads — from the sweeping A1 coastline to the rolling Borders routes — are perfectly suited to a motorhome adventure. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners who know the best routes out of the city, giving you insider tips alongside a fairly priced vehicle. Whether you are heading north into the Highlands or south through the Borders, Edinburgh is a brilliant starting point for your next road trip.
Edinburgh comes alive in August when the Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the world's largest arts festival — fills every corner of the city with performances. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs at the same time on the Castle Esplanade, so book your campervan well ahead for this period. Spring and early autumn are excellent for quieter roads and easier campsite availability, while Hogmanay celebrations in late December draw crowds for the famous street party. With Yescapa, you can often find better rates from local owners during shoulder months, making a May or September hire a smart choice for exploring Edinburgh and beyond.
Edinburgh is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 82 km north-east from Edinburgh across the Forth Road Bridge to reach St Andrews, home of golf and a striking ruined cathedral. Stop at the pretty harbour village of Anstruther for fish and chips. Campsite pitches near the coast fill quickly in summer, so book ahead.
A short 50 km drive south from Edinburgh through the rolling Borders brings you to Peebles, a charming town on the River Tweed. Visit Neidpath Castle and cycle the Glentress Forest trails. Campervan parking is straightforward in the town's long-stay car parks.
Travel 130 km north from Edinburgh through Perthshire to Pitlochry, stopping at the House of Bruar and Blair Castle along the way. The town's salmon ladder and Enchanted Forest event are highlights. Several well-equipped motorhome sites sit within easy reach of the high street.
This 185 km route north-west from Edinburgh takes you past Stirling Castle and along the shores of Loch Lomond before reaching Fort William beneath Ben Nevis. Glen Coe is an essential detour. Campervan drivers should note single-track sections on the A82 near the glen.
Cover 280 km north from Edinburgh to the Highland capital, Inverness, passing through the Cairngorms National Park and the whisky town of Aviemore. Loch Ness is just minutes from the city. Motorhome-friendly stopovers are plentiful along the A9 corridor.
A 330 km journey north-west from Edinburgh leads to the Isle of Skye via Fort William and the Skye Bridge. Explore the Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools near Glenbrittle. Plan your campervan stops carefully, as Skye's single-track roads require patience and passing places.

Edinburgh and its surroundings offer a good range of touring parks suited to both campervans and motorhomes. You will find sites with electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, modern toilet and shower blocks, and waste disposal points. Several parks sit within a short drive of the city centre, while others along the East Lothian coast provide a more rural setting with easy access back into Edinburgh by road or public transport.
Parking a larger vehicle in central Edinburgh can be challenging due to height barriers and narrow streets. Park and Ride sites on the outskirts are a practical option — they offer free parking with regular bus links into the city centre. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted for campervans or motorhomes, so plan to return to your campsite each evening. Always check height and length restrictions before entering any city-centre car park.
The best experience ever!! Amazing van and amazing people who run it
Muchas gracias. Gary y Michelle
Lovely experience and fantastic van. Clean and worked very well. Leonardo and Eleanora were very friendly and helpful. One small feedback is the fridge did not work very well but otherwise its a great van.
Muy buena experiencia. Ana nos ha tratado muy bien.
Proprietários espetaculares e super atenciosos. Autocaravana estava impecável, super confortável, excelente condução. Painéis solares dão autonomia total. Tudo impecável.
We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!
