Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Hebrides

Hebrides — a region worth exploring

The Hebrides stretch across more than 200 islands off Scotland's west coast, yet fewer than 50 are permanently inhabited, leaving vast tracts of white-sand beach and moorland entirely to wildlife. The archipelago divides into the Inner and Outer Hebrides, connected by CalMac ferry routes that make island-hopping in a campervan both practical and rewarding. On Lewis, the Callanish Standing Stones predate Stonehenge by roughly 500 years, while the Cuillin ridge on Skye rises to 992 metres and draws hillwalkers from around the world. From Stornoway to Castlebay on Barra is roughly 210 km by road and ferry, a journey that threads through Harris, where the famous Harris Tweed is still hand-woven in islanders' homes. Heading south through the Uists, you can drive the causeways linking Benbecula to North and South Uist — around 90 km of single-track road flanked by machair wildflower meadows in summer. Birdwatchers flock to the RSPB Balranald reserve on North Uist for corncrake calls, and sea-kayakers explore the sheltered waters around Loch Roag. Motorhome-friendly passing places are well signed on single-track routes, though patience and courtesy keep traffic flowing. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Scottish mainland and islands, choosing a vehicle that suits narrow Hebridean roads and ferry deck limits.

Best time to visit

May to September offers the longest daylight hours across the Hebrides, with June bringing near-endless twilight ideal for evening coastal walks. The Hebridean Celtic Festival in Stornoway each July fills the town with live music, ceilidhs, and community events. Autumn brings dramatic skies and quieter roads, perfect for photography from your campervan. Ferry schedules run more frequently in summer, so book crossings early alongside your motorhome hire. Through Yescapa, you can often find better rates in the Hebrides during May or September, when peer-to-peer owners offer competitive pricing outside the peak school-holiday weeks.

The best road trips in Hebrides

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Golden Road of Harris

190 km 3–6 days

Follow the winding east-coast road from Tarbert through tiny harbour villages like Geocrab and Drinishader. At roughly 190 km return, this campervan route passes lunar-like gneiss landscapes and ends at the famous Luskentyre Beach. Wild camping spots overlook sheltered sea lochs.

Skye's Coastal Circuit

260 km 4–6 days

Loop around the Isle of Skye from Portree, taking in the Old Man of Storr, Fairy Glen, and Neist Point lighthouse. The 260 km circuit suits a motorhome and includes well-equipped campsites at Staffin and Edinbane. Allow time for short hikes off the main road.

Uist Causeway Trail

350 km 5–8 days

Drive from Berneray south through North Uist, Benbecula, and South Uist to Eriskay, covering around 350 km with ferry links. The Hebrides' machair meadows line the western shore, and RSPB Balranald offers superb birdwatching. Campervan-friendly laybys dot the route.

Lewis and Harris Explorer

420 km 5–8 days

Start in Stornoway and head north to the Butt of Lewis, then south through Callanish Standing Stones and across to Harris. This 420 km Hebrides loop takes in Carloway Broch and the golden sands of Scarista. Motorhome service points are available in Stornoway and Tarbert.

Full Outer Hebrides Traverse

550 km 7–11 days

Travel the entire Outer Hebrides chain from Lewis to Barra, linking islands by causeway and ferry over roughly 550 km. Highlights include St Kilda viewpoints on North Uist and Kisimul Castle on Barra. A campervan gives you flexibility between ferry timetables.

Inner and Outer Hebrides Grand Tour

620 km 8–15 days

Combine Skye, the Small Isles, and the Outer Hebrides in one 620 km adventure. Catch ferries from Mallaig to Eigg, then onward to Lochboisdale. This extended Hebrides road trip suits those with time to explore Rum's wild deer herds and Mull's eagle-watching trails in a motorhome.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Hebrides

Most roads across the Hebrides are single-track with passing places, so keep your speed moderate and pull in to let oncoming traffic through. There are no toll roads on the islands. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits — 60 mph on single carriageways and 30 mph in built-up areas — while vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 50 mph on single carriageways. Fuel stations are limited, particularly on the Uists and Barra, so fill up whenever you can. Road surfaces are generally well maintained, though some routes narrow considerably near the coast.
