Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Fife

Fife — a region worth exploring

Fife's coastal path stretches over 117 miles from Kincardine to Newburgh, making it one of Scotland's longest continuous walking routes and a brilliant companion to any road trip through the region. Known as the Kingdom of Fife, this peninsula sits between the Firth of Forth to the south and the Firth of Tay to the north, giving you water views from almost every angle. The historic town of St Andrews, home to the world's oldest golf course and a medieval university founded in 1413, draws visitors year-round. From St Andrews to the fishing village of Anstruther is just 15 miles along the East Neuk coast, where you can stop for award-winning fish and chips and explore the Scottish Fisheries Museum. Inland, Falkland Palace offers a glimpse of royal Stuart history, while Dunfermline Abbey marks the burial place of Robert the Bruce. The drive from Dunfermline in the south-west to the Tay Bridge crossing near Newport-on-Tay in the north-east covers roughly 40 miles, so Fife is compact enough to explore thoroughly over a long weekend. Roads here are well-maintained and suit both campervans and larger motorhomes, with plenty of laybys and car parks along coastal routes. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Fife and the surrounding area, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style.

Best time to visit

Fife is wonderful from late spring through to early autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and wildflower-lined coastal paths, ideal for a campervan trip along the East Neuk. The St Andrews Highland Games, held each July, offer a lively day of traditional Scottish sport and music. September is quieter, with golden light over the harvest fields and easier campsite availability. Through Yescapa, you benefit from peer-to-peer pricing, which often means better rates outside the peak summer weeks of July and August. Booking a motorhome for a Fife trip in shoulder season gives you more flexibility and choice of vehicle.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Fife

Fife is well connected by the M90 motorway, which runs north–south through the region and crosses the Forth Road Bridge into Edinburgh. There are no toll roads in Fife or elsewhere in Scotland, so you can travel freely. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. The A917 coastal road through the East Neuk villages is narrower in places, so take care with larger vehicles. Rest areas and laybys are well signposted along major routes.

My partner and I have been on van trips before, but only borrowing friend's vans in the UK. This was our first time renting a van abroad, first time using Yescapa and first time exploring the Picos de Europa. Overall it was a super smooth experience and enabled us to have one of the best holidays ever - so we would fully recommend! Firstly, the booking experience. We were visiting during the eclipse and so we were wary that everything was getting booked up. We stumbled upon Yescapa and this van, then the booking experience was pretty simple so it kind of felt too good to be true. Picking up the van was a doddle, with all the instructions sent clearly over WhatsApp. This meant we felt comfortable hitting the ground running. Secondly, the van was absolutely perfect for our holiday. The shower out the back was perfect for cooling down and cleaning off after runs. The camp stove worked great for making porridge in the morning, and we were grateful for the included chairs - especially when it came to watching the eclipse. We found that the fridge tended to heat the cabin when it was running which meant it worked quite well for helping control the temperature i.e. we'd leave the fridge running if there was a cold night due. Finally, thank you to Safira the host for letting us use the van for our wonderful trip. She was very quick to respond to any questions, and super lovely in helping us out during pick-up and drop-off.

We had a lovely few days in France in the motorhome. We picked up about 30 minutes from Calais which was very convenient for the ferry. The van had everything we needed and we had a great time visiting the Normandy beaches and D day sites.

We had the best experience with this campervan and were so sad when it was time to hand it back! We had it for 3 nights during peak summer at a really reasonable price, and it was absolutely perfect for our little adventure. The host was fantastic and always replied incredibly quickly whenever we had a question. The van itself had everything we could possibly need and more. You can really tell that the owner has thought about all the little details — from salt and pepper, coffee and tea, to plenty of kitchenware and even a coffee machine! The bed was super comfortable and really easy to assemble, and the fan worked brilliantly, which was definitely appreciated during the summer heat. We honestly loved every minute of van life and were genuinely sad to leave. Thank you for helping make our trip so special — we would definitely recommend this campervan to anyone looking for an amazing adventure!

Fantastic rental, they were so helpful and got us all set up for our first ever campervan trip. The van was spotless and practically brand new. Everything was so easy to use and we just sent up the bed each day as we set off for each new place.
