Why hire a campervan or motorhome in North Scotland

North Scotland — a region worth exploring

North Scotland's legendary North Coast 500 route stretches across 516 miles of dramatic coastline, widely regarded as one of the finest road trips in the world. This vast region spans from Inverness in the east to the wild shores of Cape Wrath in the far north-west, covering some of the most sparsely populated landscapes in Europe. You can drive from Inverness to Thurso in around 110 miles, passing through the Flow Country — one of the largest expanses of blanket bog on the planet. Head west and you will reach Durness, home to Smoo Cave, a remarkable sea cave carved into limestone cliffs. The Cairngorms National Park sits at the southern gateway to the region, offering mountain trails, ancient Caledonian pine forests, and wildlife including red deer and golden eagles. Further north, the beaches of Sandwood Bay and Balnakeil rival any in the Mediterranean for white sand and turquoise water. Single-track roads with passing places are a defining feature of travel here, making a campervan the ideal way to explore at your own pace. Motorhome-friendly laybys and overnight spots are dotted along the coast, and many local communities welcome touring visitors. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from owners based across the Scottish Highlands, choosing from compact campervans for narrow lanes or larger vehicles for families seeking extra comfort on longer tours.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for exploring North Scotland by campervan, with long daylight hours peaking around the summer solstice in June — expect up to 19 hours of light in the far north. The Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival near Inverness each August draws music lovers from across the country, while the Caithness County Show in July celebrates Highland rural life. Spring and early autumn bring quieter roads and excellent wildlife-watching opportunities. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means better availability and more competitive hire rates from local owners across the Highlands.

Miguel was the perfect person to rent a camper van from. The van had everything you could wish for. He was kind, extremely helpful and the test drive I requested really assisted me. . All the paperwork and communication was highly efficient and very fair. No issues at all. As a single female in my 60s I could not recommend a better person.

My partner and I have been on van trips before, but only borrowing friend's vans in the UK. This was our first time renting a van abroad, first time using Yescapa and first time exploring the Picos de Europa. Overall it was a super smooth experience and enabled us to have one of the best holidays ever - so we would fully recommend! Firstly, the booking experience. We were visiting during the eclipse and so we were wary that everything was getting booked up. We stumbled upon Yescapa and this van, then the booking experience was pretty simple so it kind of felt too good to be true. Picking up the van was a doddle, with all the instructions sent clearly over WhatsApp. This meant we felt comfortable hitting the ground running. Secondly, the van was absolutely perfect for our holiday. The shower out the back was perfect for cooling down and cleaning off after runs. The camp stove worked great for making porridge in the morning, and we were grateful for the included chairs - especially when it came to watching the eclipse. We found that the fridge tended to heat the cabin when it was running which meant it worked quite well for helping control the temperature i.e. we'd leave the fridge running if there was a cold night due. Finally, thank you to Safira the host for letting us use the van for our wonderful trip. She was very quick to respond to any questions, and super lovely in helping us out during pick-up and drop-off.

We had a lovely few days in France in the motorhome. We picked up about 30 minutes from Calais which was very convenient for the ferry. The van had everything we needed and we had a great time visiting the Normandy beaches and D day sites.

We had the best experience with this campervan and were so sad when it was time to hand it back! We had it for 3 nights during peak summer at a really reasonable price, and it was absolutely perfect for our little adventure. The host was fantastic and always replied incredibly quickly whenever we had a question. The van itself had everything we could possibly need and more. You can really tell that the owner has thought about all the little details — from salt and pepper, coffee and tea, to plenty of kitchenware and even a coffee machine! The bed was super comfortable and really easy to assemble, and the fan worked brilliantly, which was definitely appreciated during the summer heat. We honestly loved every minute of van life and were genuinely sad to leave. Thank you for helping make our trip so special — we would definitely recommend this campervan to anyone looking for an amazing adventure!

Fantastic rental, they were so helpful and got us all set up for our first ever campervan trip. The van was spotless and practically brand new. Everything was so easy to use and we just sent up the bed each day as we set off for each new place.
