Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Lothian

Lothian — a region worth exploring

Lothian stretches across 30 miles of Scotland's eastern coastline, from the volcanic plug of Edinburgh Castle Rock to the sandy beaches of East Lothian, often called Scotland's Golf Coast for its 21 links courses. The region divides neatly into three parts: the City of Edinburgh at its heart, West Lothian with its shale-oil heritage and the grand Linlithgow Palace — birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots — and East Lothian, where the 14th-century ruins of Tantallon Castle perch above the Firth of Forth. From Edinburgh to North Berwick is roughly 40 km along the coast, while heading west from Edinburgh to Linlithgow covers about 27 km through rolling farmland. Arthur's Seat, the 251-metre peak inside Edinburgh, gives you panoramic views across the entire Lothian landscape and out to the Bass Rock, home to the world's largest colony of northern gannets. Roads here are well-maintained and largely flat, making the area ideal for both campervans and larger motorhomes. Quieter B-roads wind through barley fields and fishing villages, while the A1 provides a fast link along the coast. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Lothian, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit everything from a weekend coastal escape to a longer Scottish touring holiday.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for exploring Lothian by campervan, when daylight stretches past 10 pm and coastal temperatures sit comfortably around 15–19 °C. August brings the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, filling the city with performances and energy — book your Yescapa motorhome well ahead for this period. In late April, the East Lothian Food and Drink Festival showcases local producers, a brilliant excuse for a short spring trip. Outside peak summer, autumn rewards you with golden colours across the Pentland Hills and quieter campsites. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices in shoulder months.
