Devon's coastline stretches across 160 miles of the South West Coast Path, making it the only English county with two separate coastlines — the rugged North Devon Atlantic shore and the gentler South Devon riviera. From the wild expanses of Dartmoor National Park, where granite tors rise above open moorland, to the fossil-rich cliffs of the Jurassic Coast near Beer and Branscombe, the county rewards slow, exploratory travel. Exeter to Barnstaple covers roughly 65 miles across the heart of Devon, while the drive from Plymouth to Lynmouth spans around 95 miles through dramatically shifting landscapes. You can wander the harbour towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth, walk the Tarka Trail along the Torridge estuary, or explore the medieval village of Clovelly, where cobbled streets tumble steeply to the sea. Devon's narrow lanes and coastal roads suit campervans particularly well, letting you reach quieter spots that larger coaches simply cannot access. Dartmoor's open roads offer a different experience — wide moorland views with plenty of designated stopping points. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for winding lanes or a fully equipped motorhome for longer stays, Yescapa connects you with local owners across Devon who know the area and can share tips on the best routes and overnight spots. Hiring peer-to-peer means you get a personal touch and a wider choice of vehicles based right here in the county.
Devon comes alive from May to September, when coastal paths are at their best and campsites across the county open fully. The Dartmouth Royal Regatta in late August draws sailing enthusiasts to the River Dart, while the Sidmouth Folk Festival in early August fills the town with live music and dance. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and lower hire costs — ideal if you prefer a more relaxed pace. Through Yescapa, you can often find better rates from local campervan owners during these shoulder months. Book summer trips early, as Devon is one of the most popular destinations in the south-west.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Start in Exeter and head south through Dawlish and Teignmouth to Torquay, then on to Brixham and Dartmouth. This 130 km Devon circuit follows the South Devon coast, with harbour-side parking for campervans and plenty of seafood stops. Return via Totnes and the A38.
A 180 km loop from Plymouth across Dartmoor National Park, passing Princetown, Postbridge's medieval clapper bridge, and Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Devon's open moorland roads suit motorhomes well, with designated parking areas and wild scenery at every turn.
Travel 290 km from Barnstaple along Devon's Atlantic coast through Woolacombe, Ilfracombe, and Clovelly, then loop inland via Great Torrington and the Tarka Trail. Campervan-friendly campsites dot the coastline, and the surf beaches are worth lingering at.
Connect Devon's north and south shores on this 350 km route from Lynmouth to Salcombe, crossing Exmoor's fringe and Dartmoor's heart. Stop at South Molton, Crediton, and Buckfastleigh along the way. A motorhome gives you the comfort needed for this varied journey.
This 520 km grand tour traces Devon's entire coastline and interior, from Exeter to Exmouth, Beer, Plymouth, Clovelly, and Lynton. Allow a week or more to enjoy Jurassic Coast fossils, cream teas in Sidmouth, and Atlantic sunsets. Ideal in a well-stocked campervan.

Devon offers a wonderful range of campsites spread from its Atlantic north coast to the sheltered South Hams. You can find clifftop pitches with sea views, woodland clearings on the edge of Dartmoor, and riverside spots in quiet valleys. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated hardstanding pitches for motorhomes, while many also welcome campervans on grass pitches. Several Devon campsites stay open year-round, giving you flexibility for off-season trips.
Devon has no motorways, so most travel is via A-roads such as the A38 (Devon Expressway) linking Exeter to Plymouth and the A361 (North Devon Link Road) to Barnstaple. These dual carriageways are well maintained and suitable for motorhomes, though speed limits for vehicles over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many rural roads are narrow with passing places, so a campervan can be more practical than a larger vehicle. There are no toll roads in Devon. Fuel stations and rest stops are plentiful along major routes.
First time ever in a camper van abroad, have to say Diego was a great guy, helpful before our visit, during and made sure everything was smooth sailing/camping, thanks for ramming my sons first camping trip a succcess! R
Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.
Our trip was truly amazing! The campervan had everything we needed and our host was super kind and helpful :)
Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!
Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
It's the second time I've hired from Ruben and I hope not the last. He is very honest and explains everything clearly. His RV is lovely to drive and has everything you need. If you're looking for an RV, go with Ruben!
