Taunton's Museum of Somerset sits within a 12th-century castle that once served as the town's administrative heart for over 800 years. As the county town of Somerset, Taunton offers a rewarding mix of heritage, green spaces and easy access to some of England's finest landscapes. Stroll through Vivary Park with its elegant flower displays and miniature railway, or browse the independent shops along the pedestrianised High Street. The Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre hosts a lively programme of live performances year-round, while Hestercombe Gardens, just 6 km to the north, showcases stunning landscape designs by Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens. For a change of scenery, the Quantock Hills — England's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — begin roughly 11 km to the north-west, and the cathedral city of Wells lies 40 km to the north-east. The surrounding roads are generally well suited to larger vehicles, with wide A-roads connecting Taunton to the M5 motorway and the coast. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the area, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace while benefiting from peer-to-peer pricing and personal recommendations from people who know Somerset best.
Taunton comes alive in late summer when the Taunton Flower Show takes over Vivary Park each August, drawing thousands of visitors for horticultural displays and live entertainment. Autumn brings the Taunton Literary Festival in October, a great excuse to linger in the area. The warmer months from May to September are ideal for campervan touring, with longer days and comfortable driving conditions across the Quantock Hills and Exmoor. Book your Yescapa hire early for July and August, as these are the most popular months for motorhome travel in Somerset. Visiting in spring or autumn rewards you with quieter roads and excellent peer-to-peer availability.
