Why choose Cornwall for your road trip

Cornwall — a city worth exploring

Cornwall's coastline stretches over 400 miles, making it the longest of any English county and a magnet for those who love the sea. From the dramatic cliffs of Land's End to the subtropical gardens at the Eden Project near St Austell, this peninsula at England's southwestern tip rewards slow, exploratory travel. The Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro houses collections spanning 5,000 years of local history, while the Tate St Ives gallery overlooks Porthmeor Beach with rotating exhibitions of modern art. Tintagel Castle, perched on a rugged headland 65 km north of Truro, is steeped in Arthurian legend and managed by English Heritage. Plymouth sits just 95 km to the east, and Exeter is roughly 145 km northeast, giving you easy access to Devon's moors and cities. Cornwall's roads are famously narrow and winding in places, particularly along the north coast between Padstow and Bude, so a compact campervan can be a real advantage when navigating single-track lanes. Larger motorhomes work well on the A30 corridor and at the many spacious touring parks dotted across the county. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Cornwall, which means you can often collect your vehicle right where your trip begins — no long transfers, no wasted time. It is a practical, community-driven way to explore one of Britain's most rewarding coastal regions at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Cornwall comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours let you make the most of coastal walks and beach stops. The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival in June draws thousands of visitors, and the Boardmasters festival near Newquay in August combines surfing and live music. Spring and autumn are ideal for quieter campervan touring, with fewer vehicles on narrow lanes and more availability at popular sites. Booking your motorhome through Yescapa outside peak summer often means better rates from local owners. Plan ahead for July and August — Cornwall is the most sought-after season for good reason.

Top getaways from Cornwall

Cornwall is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Cornwall to St Ives

45km west 1–3 days

Head 45 km west from Truro to the artistic harbour town of St Ives. Stop at Hayle Towans for wide sandy beaches, then explore the Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Museum. Campervan parking is limited in the town centre, so use the park-and-ride at Lelant Saltings for easy access.

Cornwall to Padstow and Newquay

75km northeast 2–4 days

This 75 km route along the north coast links two of Cornwall's best-loved towns. Enjoy Rick Stein's seafood trail in Padstow and the surf beaches at Fistral in Newquay. Several touring parks near Newquay welcome motorhomes and offer electric hook-ups with sea views.

Cornwall to the Jurassic Coast

220km east 4–7 days

Travel 220 km east along the south coast to reach Dorset's UNESCO-listed Jurassic Coast. Stop in Lyme Regis for fossil hunting and visit Durdle Door's iconic limestone arch. The route passes through Exeter, a good overnight halt with motorhome-friendly parking near the city centre.

Cornwall to Falmouth and the Lizard Peninsula

95km southeast 2–5 days

Drive 95 km southeast to Falmouth's National Maritime Museum, then continue to Lizard Point — mainland Britain's most southerly spot. Kynance Cove is a must-see detour. Roads narrow on the Lizard, so a compact campervan gives you more flexibility on single-track lanes.

Cornwall to Dartmoor

150km northeast 3–6 days

Cover 150 km northeast to reach Dartmoor National Park. Pass through Bodmin Moor and stop at Launceston Castle before arriving on the open moorland. Wild ponies, granite tors, and the village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor await. Several campervan-friendly sites sit on Dartmoor's fringes.

Cornwall to South Wales

310km north 5–8 days

A 310 km drive north crosses the Severn Bridge into Wales. Explore the Gower Peninsula's beaches and the Brecon Beacons' mountain trails. Cardiff offers culture at the National Museum. The M5 and M4 motorways make this an easy motorhome route with plenty of service stops along the way.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in Cornwall requires a little planning, as many town-centre car parks have height barriers or tight spaces. Several park-and-ride services operate during the summer months, and these are often the easiest option for motorhomes and campervans. Overnight parking outside designated sites is generally not permitted in Cornwall's coastal towns, so always check local signage. Arriving early in the day during peak season helps you secure a suitable space.

  • Truro Park and Ride, 10km south — Located on the outskirts of Truro with regular bus links to the city centre. Spacious bays can accommodate larger vehicles, and charges are reasonable. No overnight stays permitted.
  • The Sands Car Park, Porthmeor, 50km west — Situated beside Porthmeor Beach in St Ives, this car park has limited spaces for taller vehicles. Height restrictions apply at certain sections, so check signage on arrival. Pay-and-display only.
  • Quarry Car Park, Falmouth, 30km southeast — A large car park near Falmouth town centre with spaces suitable for campervans. Close to the National Maritime Museum and the waterfront. Pay-and-display with no overnight parking allowed.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Cornwall

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
