Why choose Launceston for your road trip

Launceston — a city worth exploring

Launceston's medieval castle perches on a volcanic mound that has watched over the town since William the Conqueror ordered its construction in 1067. Sitting at the gateway to Cornwall, this historic market town blends centuries of heritage with easy access to both coastline and moorland. Launceston Castle, managed by English Heritage, offers panoramic views across Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, while the town's Steam Railway chugs along the scenic Kensey Valley on a narrow-gauge track originally laid in the Victorian era. St Mary Magdalene Church, famous for its intricately carved granite exterior, stands as one of the finest examples of decorative stonework in the South West. Lawrence House Museum, a Georgian townhouse on Castle Street, tells the story of the town through local artefacts and exhibitions. The rugged expanse of Bodmin Moor lies just 13 km to the south-west, and the surfing beaches of Bude sit roughly 35 km to the north-west, making Launceston a superb base for exploring both landscapes. Roads around the town are well suited to larger vehicles, with the A30 dual carriageway providing smooth access from Devon and beyond. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, giving you the freedom to set your own pace. Picking up from a nearby owner means you skip the queues at big depots and often get personal tips on the best routes and overnight spots across Cornwall.

Best time to visit

Launceston comes alive in July when the town hosts its annual Agricultural Show, a celebration of rural life with livestock competitions, local food stalls, and craft displays. Late spring through to early autumn is ideal for touring by campervan, as the lanes around Bodmin Moor and the north Cornwall coast are at their most inviting. If you prefer quieter roads and more choice of pitches, consider visiting Launceston in May or September. Hiring through Yescapa gives you access to peer-to-peer pricing, which can be especially favourable outside the peak summer weeks. Book a few weeks ahead for July and August to secure the best motorhome options.
