Why choose Exeter for your road trip

Exeter — a city worth exploring

Exeter's cathedral, completed in 1400, holds the longest unbroken stretch of Gothic stone vaulting in the world at 96 metres. This historic city on the River Exe blends Roman heritage with a lively modern culture, making it a rewarding base for exploring Devon. Stroll through the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, which houses over a million objects spanning natural history and world cultures. Follow the Exeter Quayside along the canal basin, where converted warehouses now host independent cafés and craft shops. The Underground Passages, a medieval network built to carry fresh water into the city, offer guided tours beneath the high street — the only such system open to the public in England. Just beyond the city walls, Haldon Forest Park provides waymarked trails through ancient woodland. Dartmoor National Park lies only 20 km to the south-west, while the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site begins at Exmouth, just 16 km to the south-east. Both are easily reached by road, with well-signed routes suited to larger vehicles. Exeter's compact centre sits within a ring road, so you can park up and explore on foot before heading out into the Devon countryside. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Exeter area, giving you the flexibility to collect a vehicle nearby and set off on your own schedule. It is a practical, personal way to begin a touring holiday through one of England's most scenic counties.

Best time to visit

Exeter comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours make the most of Devon's coastline and countryside. The Exeter Festival of South West Food & Drink in April is a brilliant reason to time your visit for spring, while the Exeter Respect Festival in June fills Belmont Park with live music and community spirit. Summer is the busiest season for campervan travel in Devon, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa early gives you the widest choice from local owners and often better rates. Autumn brings quieter roads and golden colours across Dartmoor, ideal for a relaxed motorhome tour without the crowds.

Top getaways from Exeter

Exeter is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Exeter to Exmouth

16km southeast 1–3 days

Head 16 km south-east from Exeter to reach Exmouth, where the Jurassic Coast begins. Walk along the sandy beach, then visit A La Ronde, an 18th-century 16-sided house managed by the National Trust. Campervan parking is available near the seafront, and the Exe Estuary trail offers easy cycling back towards the city.

Exeter to Sidmouth

45km east 1–4 days

Drive 45 km east from Exeter along the coast road to Sidmouth, passing through Budleigh Salterton and its striking red cliffs. Sidmouth's Regency architecture lines the esplanade, and the Donkey Sanctuary nearby welcomes visitors year-round. Several campsites along this stretch offer hook-ups and sea views.

Exeter to North Devon Coast

110km northwest 3–6 days

Travel 110 km north-west from Exeter to explore the dramatic North Devon coastline. Stop at Barnstaple for its historic Pannier Market, then continue to Woolacombe for wide sandy beaches. Exeter to the Cornish Coast

150km southwest 3–6 days

From Exeter, head 150 km south-west to reach the Cornish coast around Looe and Polperro. These fishing villages offer narrow harbour streets and fresh seafood. Stop at Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor along the way. Plan your campervan route carefully, as some Cornish lanes are single-track with passing places.

Exeter to the Pembrokeshire Coast

200km northwest 5–8 days

Cover 200 km north-west from Exeter to reach the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in Wales. Cross the Severn Bridge and follow the coast to Tenby, with its pastel-coloured harbour, and St Davids, Britain's smallest city. Freshwater West beach is ideal for a campervan overnight stop with proper facilities nearby.

Exeter to the Cotswolds

260km northeast 5–8 days

Drive 260 km north-east from Exeter into the Cotswolds, passing through Bath and its Roman Baths along the way. Explore honey-stone villages like Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold. Where to park your motorhome

Exeter operates controlled parking zones across the city centre, and most on-street bays have height or length restrictions that rule out larger vehicles. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted unless signposted otherwise, so always check local signage before settling in for the night.

  • Matford Park and Ride, 4km south — Large surface car park south of the city with regular bus links to the centre. Suitable for longer vehicles and open during park-and-ride operating hours.
  • Honiton Road Park and Ride, 4km east — Spacious car park on the eastern approach to Exeter. Accepts larger vehicles and connects to the city centre by frequent bus service.
  • Exeter Quay Car Park, 1km south — Pay-and-display car park near the historic quayside. Height restrictions apply, so check clearance before entering. No overnight stays permitted.
  • Haven Road Car Park, 1km south — Close to the canal basin and quayside area. Limited spaces for taller vehicles. Useful for short daytime visits to the waterfront.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
