Why choose Bournemouth for your road trip

Bournemouth — a city worth exploring

Bournemouth's seven miles of sandy beach stretch along the Dorset coast, backed by over 2,000 acres of award-winning gardens and Victorian-era parks. The town grew from a handful of cottages in the 1810s into one of England's most popular seaside resorts, and today the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum — a clifftop villa filled with Pre-Raphaelite paintings — remains a landmark unlike any other on the south coast. Stroll along Bournemouth Pier for panoramic sea views, then head inland to explore the Lower Gardens, a ribbon of green that runs from the seafront right into the town centre. The Oceanarium on Pier Approach brings you face to face with sharks, turtles and tropical reef fish, making it a brilliant stop for families. Beyond the town itself, the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site begins just 8 km east at Hengistbury Head, while the New Forest National Park sits only 16 km to the north-east, offering ancient woodland trails ideal for a day trip. Bournemouth's coastal roads are well suited to larger vehicles, and the surrounding area has plenty of dedicated campervan and motorhome service points. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across the region, giving you the flexibility to collect a campervan nearby and set off at your own pace. Whether you fancy a clifftop walk or a forest drive, Bournemouth is a superb base for exploring the south of England.

Best time to visit

Bournemouth comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours make the most of the coastline. The Bournemouth Air Festival in late August draws huge crowds with aerobatic displays over the sea, so it is worth booking your campervan well in advance for that weekend. Spring and early autumn are quieter, with mild temperatures that suit leisurely motorhome touring along the Jurassic Coast. Through Yescapa, you can often find better rates outside peak summer, as local owners set their own prices. Whenever you visit Bournemouth, plan your route early to secure a pitch at popular coastal campsites.

Top getaways from Bournemouth

Bournemouth is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Bournemouth to Lulworth Cove

50km east 1–4 days

Head 50 km west from Bournemouth along the Jurassic Coast to Lulworth Cove and the natural limestone arch at Durdle Door. Stop at Studland Bay for sandy beaches and the Old Harry Rocks viewpoint. Several campervan-friendly car parks sit near the cove, though spaces fill quickly in summer.

Bournemouth to Exeter

75km west 2–4 days

This 75 km drive west from Bournemouth takes you through Dorchester, home to the Dorset County Museum, and on to Exeter with its medieval cathedral and historic Quayside. The A35 and A30 are comfortable for motorhomes. Plan two to four days to enjoy the market towns and rolling Dorset countryside along the way.

Bournemouth to Winchester and the South Downs

130km northeast 3–6 days

Travel 130 km north-east from Bournemouth through the New Forest to Winchester, where you can visit the Great Hall and its Arthurian Round Table. Continue into the South Downs National Park for chalk ridgeway walks. Campervan pitches are plentiful around the national park's visitor centres.

Bournemouth to Bath and the Cotswolds

160km northwest 3–6 days

Cover 160 km north-west from Bournemouth to reach Bath's Roman Baths and Royal Crescent, then press on into the Cotswolds for honey-stone villages like Castle Combe and Bibury. Motorhome parking is available at Bath's Lansdown Park and Ride. Allow three to six days to explore at a relaxed pace.

Bournemouth to the Cornish Coast

220km southwest 5–8 days

Set off 220 km south-west from Bournemouth to reach Cornwall's dramatic coastline. Visit the Eden Project near St Austell and the harbour town of St Ives. Coastal roads can be narrow, so a compact campervan works best. Five to eight days lets you take in Padstow, Falmouth and the Lizard Peninsula.

Bournemouth to Pembrokeshire

280km west 5–8 days

Drive 280 km west from Bournemouth across South Wales to reach the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Explore Tenby's pastel-coloured harbour and St Davids, Britain's smallest city. Campervan-friendly aires dot the coastline. Allow five to eight days to enjoy cliff walks, boat trips and Barafundle Bay.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Bournemouth

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
