Swindon's Magic Roundabout, a junction of five mini-roundabouts circling one large central roundabout, has baffled and fascinated drivers since 1972. This Wiltshire town sits at the crossroads of history and innovation, from the once-mighty Great Western Railway works at STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway to the designer bargains at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet. Art lovers can explore the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, home to works by Henry Moore and L.S. Lowry, while families enjoy the interactive exhibits at the Science Museum at Wroughton, set across a former airfield just south of town. Green spaces such as Lydiard Park, a beautifully restored country estate with a walled garden, offer a welcome breather. Swindon also makes a superb base for wider exploration: the Avebury stone circle sits roughly 30 km to the south-west, and the elegant Georgian streets of Bath are about 60 km to the west. The surrounding countryside is gentle and open, with wide A-roads that suit larger vehicles well. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, giving you the freedom to set off at your own pace. Whether you are heading to the Cotswolds or the Wessex Downs, picking up your vehicle in Swindon puts you right where the adventure begins.
Swindon comes alive in summer, when events like the Swindon Festival of Literature in May draw visitors from across the region. The annual Old Town Festival in July fills the streets with live music, food stalls, and family entertainment. Hiring a campervan between May and September means longer daylight hours and easy access to surrounding countryside campsites. With Yescapa, you benefit from peer-to-peer pricing that can be gentler on the wallet than traditional hire companies, especially if you book a few weeks ahead. Autumn and spring are equally rewarding around Swindon, with quieter roads and plenty of availability.
Swindon is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 30 km south-west from Swindon to the Avebury stone circle, one of Europe's largest prehistoric monuments. Continue to Marlborough for its wide High Street and independent shops. Campervan parking is available near Avebury's National Trust car park, and the route follows easy A-roads throughout.
Drive 60 km west from Swindon to reach Bath, famous for the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent. Stop at Castle Combe along the way, often called one of England's prettiest villages. Motorhome drivers will find well-signed park-and-ride sites on the outskirts of Bath for easy city access.
From Swindon, head 95 km north-west into the Cotswolds, taking in Cirencester's Roman amphitheatre and Bourton-on-the-Water's riverside walks. Stow-on-the-Wold offers a fine market square and local produce shops. Several campsites in the area welcome campervans and offer electric hook-ups.
Travel 130 km south from Swindon through rolling Wiltshire countryside to Stonehenge, then on to Salisbury to see its medieval cathedral and Magna Carta. The New Forest is a short detour further south. Campervan-friendly aires and small campsites dot the route for overnight stops.
Set off 210 km south-west from Swindon to Dorset's Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Durdle Door's limestone arch and Lulworth Cove before exploring Weymouth's sandy beach. Motorhome pitches are plentiful along the coast, many with sea views and full facilities.
Drive 250 km north-west from Swindon into the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. Hike Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain, and explore the waterfalls at Ystradfellte. Campervan stops near Brecon town offer hook-ups and easy access to walking trails across the park.

Swindon sits in open Wiltshire countryside, so you will find a good selection of campsites within a short drive of the town centre. Many offer hardstanding pitches suited to both campervans and motorhomes, along with electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and waste disposal points. Several sites border the North Wessex Downs, giving you peaceful surroundings and easy access to walking routes.
Swindon offers several options for parking larger vehicles. The town centre has height-restricted multi-storeys, so motorhome and campervan drivers should look for surface car parks or dedicated areas on the outskirts. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted without checking local signage, so plan ahead or use a nearby campsite for longer stays.
This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!
First time ever in a camper van abroad, have to say Diego was a great guy, helpful before our visit, during and made sure everything was smooth sailing/camping, thanks for ramming my sons first camping trip a succcess! R
Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.
Our trip was truly amazing! The campervan had everything we needed and our host was super kind and helpful :)
Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!
Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
