The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Plymouth's Royal Citadel has stood guard over Plymouth Sound since 1665, making it one of the most impressive coastal fortifications still in use by the British military. This waterfront city in Devon shaped maritime history — it was from here that the Mayflower set sail in 1620, and you can trace that story at the Mayflower Museum on the Barbican. Stroll along Plymouth Hoe for sweeping views across the Sound, or visit the National Marine Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the United Kingdom. The city sits at the meeting point of the rivers Plym and Tamar, with Dartmoor National Park just 11 km to the north-east and the Cornish border town of Saltash only 5 km to the west across the Tamar Bridge. Plymouth's coastal roads and nearby moorland make it a superb base for exploring by campervan, with wide A-roads connecting you to both rugged coastline and open countryside. For culture, the Theatre Royal Plymouth hosts world-class productions, while Sutton Harbour offers independent restaurants and galleries in converted warehouses. When you hire a motorhome through Yescapa, you connect directly with local owners who know the best routes and overnight spots around Plymouth. A campervan gives you the freedom to wake up beside the sea one morning and on the edge of the moor the next — all at your own pace.
Plymouth is wonderful from May to September, when long daylight hours let you make the most of the coastline and Dartmoor. The British Fireworks Championships light up Plymouth Sound over two weekends in August, drawing crowds to the Hoe — book your campervan early for this period. The Plymouth Seafood Festival in September celebrates the city's fishing heritage with tastings and cookery demos along the Barbican. Outside peak summer, spring and autumn bring quieter campsites and more flexible availability through Yescapa, where peer-to-peer pricing often means better value than traditional hire companies.
Plymouth is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 50 km south-east from Plymouth along the A379 to reach Salcombe, a sailing town on the Kingsbridge Estuary. Stop at Bigbury-on-Sea to walk across to Burgh Island at low tide. Campervan parking is available at Creek Car Park in Salcombe, though lanes narrow as you approach — arrive early in summer.
Cross the Tamar Bridge and drive 75 km south-west to the twin fishing villages of Looe and Polperro on the Cornish coast. Walk the coastal path between them for dramatic cliff views. Polperro's narrow streets are car-free, so park your campervan at the village entrance and explore on foot.
Follow the A38 and A30 for 130 km west from Plymouth to reach St Ives, famous for Tate St Ives and Porthmeor Beach. Break the journey at Bodmin Moor for a moorland walk around Golitha Falls. Motorhome pitches at Ayr Holiday Park sit within walking distance of St Ives harbour.
Drive 160 km north-east from Plymouth through Exeter to reach Exmoor National Park. Visit Lynmouth's cliff railway and the Valley of Rocks near Lynton. The A39 offers well-maintained roads suitable for larger vehicles, and campsites at Porlock Vale welcome campervans with full hook-ups.
Travel 200 km east from Plymouth along the A35 to explore the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door near Wareham, then continue to Swanage for fossil hunting. Several campsites along this stretch offer motorhome service points and sea views.
Head 280 km north-west from Plymouth across the Severn crossing into Wales to reach Pembrokeshire. Explore St Davids, Britain's smallest city, and boat trips to Skomer Island for puffin watching. Hire a campervan through Yescapa and enjoy spacious coastal campsites around Tenby and Broad Haven.

Plymouth sits between the coast and Dartmoor, giving you a fine choice of campsites. You will find pitches with electric hook-ups, shower blocks, and waste disposal points suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Several sites sit right on the waterfront, while others nestle on the edge of the moor. If you prefer to stay close to Plymouth city centre, a handful of sites operate within a short drive of the Barbican and the Hoe.
Plymouth offers several options for parking larger vehicles. Overnight motorhome parking is permitted in designated areas, though always check local signage for height and length restrictions. The city centre operates pay-and-display car parks, and some accommodate taller vehicles. Plan ahead during summer weekends when waterfront spaces fill quickly.
We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
We hired the van for 8 nights and it was perfect. Went up to the mountains and down to the beach. It was very spacious and well kitted out. The owners are also lovely, accommodating and quick to reply to our message
Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
