Why hire a campervan or motorhome in South West

South West — a region worth exploring

The South West of England stretches across 250 miles from the ancient stone circle at Stonehenge in Wiltshire to the windswept cliffs of Land's End in Cornwall, making it one of the longest continuous touring regions in the country. You can follow the South West Coast Path — all 630 miles of it — through Devon, Dorset, Somerset, and Cornwall, passing landmarks like the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, the Eden Project's iconic biomes near St Austell, and the dramatic harbour town of Clovelly. From Bristol to Penzance, the distance is roughly 190 miles, giving you a satisfying week-long route with plenty of stops along the way. The region's geography is wonderfully varied: rolling moorlands on Dartmoor and Exmoor, sheltered estuaries along the south coast, and narrow lanes winding through fishing villages — all well suited to exploring by campervan. Larger motorhome drivers will find good access on the A30 and A38 trunk roads, while smaller campervans can navigate the tighter coastal routes with ease. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across the South West, so you can pick up a vehicle close to where your trip begins — whether that's Bath, Exeter, or Plymouth — and choose from a wide range of sizes and styles to match your plans.

Best time to visit

The South West enjoys some of the mildest conditions in England, and May to September is the most popular window for campervan trips. Book ahead if you plan to visit during the Glastonbury Festival in late June or the Boardmasters surf and music festival in Newquay each August, as the region gets especially busy. Spring and early autumn offer quieter roads and easier campsite availability across Devon and Cornwall. Through Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates from local owners outside peak summer months, making shoulder-season trips a smart choice for exploring the South West at your own pace.

The best road trips in South West

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Jurassic Coast Discovery

200 km 3–6 days

Drive roughly 200 km along Dorset's Jurassic Coast from Poole to Exeter, stopping at Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, and the fossil-rich beaches of Lyme Regis. This South West route suits campervans perfectly, with well-signed coastal car parks and campsites dotted along the way.

The North Devon Explorer

180 km 3–6 days

Cover around 180 km through the South West's rugged north coast, from Barnstaple to Bude via Woolacombe, Ilfracombe, and Clovelly. Exmoor's moorland roads add drama, and smaller campervans handle the narrow lanes with ease. Plenty of farm campsites welcome overnight stays.

The Cornish Peninsula Loop

350 km 5–8 days

A 350 km loop from Plymouth through Looe, Falmouth, the Lizard Peninsula, and St Ives before returning via Bodmin Moor. This South West circuit takes in the Eden Project and Minack Theatre. Motorhomes and campervans both find good facilities at coastal campsites throughout Cornwall.

The Somerset and Wiltshire Heritage Trail

400 km 5–8 days

Spanning 400 km, this South West route links Bath, Glastonbury, Wells Cathedral, Stonehenge, and Salisbury. Wide A-roads make it comfortable for motorhomes, and you pass through gentle countryside with well-equipped campsites. A great mix of history, market towns, and open landscapes.

The Full South Coast Traverse

550 km 7–11 days

Travel 550 km from Bristol to Land's End along the south coast, calling at Taunton, Sidmouth, Dartmouth, and Penzance. This South West epic covers fishing harbours, sandy bays, and Dartmoor's open moorland. Campervan hire gives you the flexibility to linger wherever the scenery demands.

The Grand South West Circuit

650 km 10–15 days

A comprehensive 650 km loop starting in Bristol, heading south through Glastonbury and Exeter, around Cornwall's coast to St Ives, then returning via the South West's north coast through Bude and Barnstaple. Allow two weeks to enjoy Dartmoor, the Eden Project, and Exmoor without rushing.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in South West

The South West's main routes — the M5 motorway from Bristol to Exeter and the A30/A38 beyond — are toll-free, so you can travel without extra charges. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Many rural roads in Devon and Cornwall are single-track with passing places, so plan your route carefully if you are driving a larger vehicle. Rest areas and services are well spaced along the M5, though they become less frequent once you head further west on the A30.
