Paignton's 26-metre-long pier has welcomed visitors to Torbay since 1879, making it one of the few remaining Victorian pleasure piers on England's south coast. The town sits at the heart of the English Riviera, a UNESCO Global Geopark, where red sandstone cliffs meet sandy beaches stretching from Goodrington Sands to Preston Sands. Families flock to Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, home to over 2,500 animals, while the Dartmouth Steam Railway carries passengers along a scenic 11-km coastal route to Kingswear. For a dose of local history, Kirkham House is a beautifully preserved medieval stone dwelling right in the town centre. Torquay lies just 5 km to the north, and the market town of Totnes is 12 km to the west, both easily reached by road. The flat seafront promenade and wide approach roads make Paignton particularly welcoming for larger vehicles, and the surrounding South Devon countryside offers plenty of space to explore at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Torbay area, giving you the freedom to set your own schedule. Whether you want to wake up near the coast or head inland to Dartmoor, having a vehicle from a nearby owner means less travel time and more time enjoying everything Paignton and South Devon have to offer.
Paignton comes alive from May to September, when the English Riviera Airshow lights up the skies over Torbay each June and the Paignton Regatta brings boat races and fireworks in August. These months offer the longest days for exploring the coast by campervan, and you can make the most of the seafront and beaches. Booking your motorhome early through Yescapa gives you access to competitive peer-to-peer prices, often more affordable than traditional hire companies. Outside peak season, autumn and spring bring quieter roads and easier parking, ideal for a relaxed trip along the South Devon coast.
Paignton is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 45 km south along the coast road to the historic naval town of Dartmouth. Stop at Slapton Sands to walk the shingle beach and visit the Sherman Tank memorial. In Dartmouth, explore the Britannia Royal Naval College and Dartmouth Castle. Campervan parking is available at the Park and Ride just outside town.
Drive 30 km west to Totnes, a creative market town on the River Dart. Browse the Totnes Elizabethan Market held each Tuesday and visit Totnes Castle for views across the valley. The A385 is a straightforward route with good road widths for a motorhome. Nearby Berry Pomeroy Castle adds a rewarding detour.
Travel 110 km north from Paignton to Exmoor National Park. Pass through Tiverton and stop at Dunster Castle before reaching Porlock Vale. Walk the Valley of Rocks near Lynton and spot wild Exmoor ponies on the open moorland. Several campervan-friendly sites sit along the A396 corridor.
Cover 150 km east along the coast to explore the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Visit Beer Quarry Caves, walk the Undercliff between Axmouth and Lyme Regis, and see the Cobb harbour at Lyme Regis. Motorhome pitches are plentiful at sites near Charmouth and Bridport.

Paignton and the surrounding Torbay area offer a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. You will find sites with electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, shower blocks, and waste disposal points. Many are within walking distance of the coast, while others sit in the rolling South Devon countryside just a short drive from Paignton, giving you easy access to beaches and local attractions.
Paignton offers several parking options suitable for larger vehicles. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted unless specifically signed, so plan ahead. The seafront car parks can accommodate campervans during the day, and dedicated motorhome stopovers are available nearby. Always check height barriers before entering, as some town-centre car parks have restrictions.
Ottimo camper, semplice da guidare. Esperienza positiva
Beyond happy with the whole experience. The motorhome was very comfy and had everything we needed for our little girls camping trip. More importantly the owners were extremely friendly and beyond helpful at all times with the vehicle, the routes, the airport pickups and dropp offs and many many more things! All and all very happy with this experience!
The experience was seemles from start to finish. Handover was very straightforward with all the major information required exchanged. Fabian the owner remained available during the trip for any issues that may arise. The vehicle was as advertised and in very good condition. Very nice camping caravan, equipped with everything that you could need. The return process was straightforward when returning vehicle. Also my car was kept securley stored at the location for arrival and drop off. Overall very good experience and i would highly recommend and use again in the future.
We really enjoyed our travels around Brittany in Clarisse's camper van. It was comfortable and easy to drive and had everything we needed for our holiday. Clarisse explained everything clearly to us before we set off.
A really positive experience from start to finish.
