Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire — a region worth exploring

Gloucestershire's Cotswold Way stretches 164 km from Chipping Campden to Bath, tracing a limestone escarpment that has shaped the county's character for centuries. The county sits at the meeting point of the Cotswolds, the Severn Vale, and the Forest of Dean, giving you an extraordinary range of landscapes to explore from a single base. From Gloucester Cathedral — whose cloisters doubled as Hogwarts corridors — to the elegant Regency terraces of Cheltenham, the distance is just 14 km, making it easy to combine culture and countryside in one trip. Head west and you reach the Forest of Dean, a 110-square-kilometre ancient woodland threaded with cycling trails and sculpture walks. The Severn Estuary, famous for its tidal bore, adds a dramatic natural spectacle, while market towns like Stow-on-the-Wold, Tewkesbury, and Cirencester reward slow exploration with independent shops and centuries-old pubs. Roads through the Cotswolds roll gently between honey-coloured villages, well suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes, though narrower lanes around the Forest of Dean favour smaller vehicles. Cheltenham to Stow-on-the-Wold is roughly 26 km, a perfect afternoon drive with stops along the way. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Gloucestershire, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style — a flexible, community-driven way to discover this remarkable county.

Best time to visit

Gloucestershire comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours let you make the most of the Cotswolds and Forest of Dean. The Cheltenham Literature Festival in October draws visitors from across the country, while the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling near Brockworth each late May bank holiday is a uniquely Gloucestershire spectacle. Summer is the busiest period for campsites, so booking your campervan through Yescapa early gives you the widest choice and often better rates from local owners. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and golden light across the limestone villages — ideal for a motorhome tour at a relaxed pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire is well connected by the M5 motorway, which runs north–south through the county, and the A417, linking Gloucester to Cirencester. Motorways in England are toll-free, though larger motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes must observe a speed limit of 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. Many Cotswold roads are single-track with passing places, so plan your route if you are driving a wider vehicle. The M5 has regular service stations with facilities suitable for campervans and motorhomes, including waste disposal at some stops. Watch for height restrictions on older bridges in the Forest of Dean area.

I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)

Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)

Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
