Why choose Bristol for your road trip

Bristol — a city worth exploring

Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge has spanned 214 metres across the Avon Gorge since 1864, making it one of the most recognisable landmarks in the south-west of England. The city blends maritime heritage with a thriving creative scene, and there is plenty to discover on foot or from the comfort of your own vehicle. Stroll along the harbourside to visit We The Curious, an interactive science centre right on the waterfront, or head to the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery on Queens Road for world-class collections free of charge. Street-art enthusiasts can follow the Banksy trail through Stokes Croft and the Old City, while foodies will love the independent stalls at St Nicholas Market, trading since 1743. Nature is never far away either — the Leigh Woods National Nature Reserve sits just across the gorge, and the rolling Mendip Hills begin only 20 km to the south. Bath, with its Roman baths and Georgian crescents, is a mere 19 km to the east, making it an easy day trip. Bristol's position at the junction of the M4 and M5 motorways means you can reach the Brecon Beacons, the Jurassic Coast, or the Cotswolds within a couple of hours. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners who know the best routes and overnight spots. A motorhome gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, and with peer-to-peer hire you often find more flexible pick-up times and competitive prices than traditional outlets.

Best time to visit

Bristol comes alive in summer, when the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta lights up Ashton Court each August with mass ascents and night glows. The Bristol Harbour Festival in July fills the waterfront with live music, boat displays, and street performances. From May to September, longer days and settled weather make campervan touring around the south-west a real pleasure. Spring and autumn bring quieter campsites and gentler roads through the Mendip Hills and Cotswolds. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer hire means you can often find better rates outside peak months, so booking a motorhome for an October half-term break is well worth considering.

Top getaways from Bristol

Bristol is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Bristol to Pembrokeshire

210km west 5–8 days

Head 210 km west from Bristol across the Severn Bridge into Wales. Stop at Tenby for its pastel-coloured harbour and continue to St Davids, Britain's smallest city. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park offers clifftop campervan pitches with sea views. Allow 5–8 days to explore the coastal path properly.

Bristol to Cornwall

280km southwest 5–8 days

Drive 280 km south-west from Bristol along the M5 and A30 to reach Cornwall's Atlantic coast. Visit the Eden Project near St Austell and the harbour town of Padstow. Motorhome-friendly campsites dot the coastline, though booking ahead in summer is wise. Plan 5–8 days for a full loop.

Bristol to Bath

19km east 1–3 days

Just 19 km east of Bristol, Bath is ideal for a short 1–3 day trip. Explore the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent before parking up at a nearby campsite. The A4 is a straightforward drive, and you can detour through Keynsham along the River Avon for a scenic route.

Bristol to Cheddar Gorge

50km south 1–4 days

A quick 50 km south from Bristol brings you to Cheddar Gorge, England's largest gorge. Walk the cliff-top trail or visit Gough's Cave before heading to Glastonbury Tor nearby. Campervan parking is available at the gorge entrance, and the quiet lanes of the Mendip Hills reward slow touring over 1–4 days.

Bristol to Exmoor National Park

120km southwest 3–6 days

Travel 120 km south-west from Bristol to reach Exmoor's open moorland and wooded valleys. Stop in Dunster to see its medieval castle, then drive to Lynmouth on the dramatic north Devon coast. Several campsites welcome motorhomes, and the narrow lanes add charm to a 3–6 day adventure.

Bristol to the Cotswolds

140km north 3–6 days

Head 140 km north from Bristol into the honey-stone villages of the Cotswolds. Explore Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold, then visit Blenheim Palace on the eastern edge. Roads are generally campervan-friendly, and farm-based campsites offer peaceful overnight stays over 3–6 days.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in central Bristol requires a bit of planning. The city operates a Clean Air Zone, so check your vehicle's compliance before entering. Several Park & Ride sites on the outskirts accept bigger vehicles and connect you to the centre by bus. Overnight parking in council car parks is generally not permitted for motorhomes, so use a designated campsite or an approved aire-style stop instead.

  • Brislington Park & Ride, 5km southeast — Located on the A4 to the south-east of the city centre, with regular bus services into Bristol. Spacious bays can accommodate larger vehicles during the day.
  • Long Ashton Park & Ride, 5km southwest — Situated off the A370 to the south-west, this site offers frequent buses to the centre. Good option for campervans needing daytime parking while you explore on foot.
  • Cabot Circus Car Park, 1km northeast — Multi-storey car park in the city centre with a 2.1 m height restriction, so only suitable for smaller campervans. Open 24 hours with ANPR payment.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Bristol

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
