Why choose Tavistock for your road trip

Tavistock — a city worth exploring

Tavistock sits on the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, where the River Tavy has shaped the town's character since its founding around a Benedictine abbey in the 10th century. The Pannier Market, held in the Grade II listed market building since 1105, remains one of Devon's longest-running markets and a brilliant place to pick up local produce. You can explore the imposing ruins of Tavistock Abbey, stroll along the Tavistock Canal — an early 19th-century waterway stretching 2.4 km to Morwellham Quay — or visit the Sir Francis Drake statue on Plymouth Road, honouring the town's most famous son. Dartmoor's open moorland begins just minutes from the centre, offering dramatic granite tors, wild ponies, and ancient clapper bridges like the one at Postbridge, roughly 21 km east. Plymouth, Devon's largest city, lies just 24 km to the south, giving you easy access to the coast and the Royal William Yard. The roads around Tavistock range from wide A-roads to narrow Devon lanes, so choosing the right vehicle matters. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, which means you often get first-hand tips on the best routes, quieter parking spots, and favourite Dartmoor wild-camping areas — the kind of knowledge that makes a road trip through west Devon feel genuinely personal.

Best time to visit

Tavistock comes alive in October during the Tavistock Goose Fair, a centuries-old charter fair dating back to the 12th century, filling the town with food stalls, fairground rides, and local crafts. Summer months from June to August are ideal for exploring Dartmoor by campervan, with long daylight hours and reliable access to moorland roads. If you prefer quieter routes and easier campsite availability, May and September offer a lovely balance. Booking your motorhome through Yescapa outside peak summer can mean better rates from local owners, and you will find more flexibility with pitches at nearby sites.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.

We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
