Why hire a campervan or motorhome in South West Wales

South West Wales — a region worth exploring

South West Wales is home to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the only coastal national trail in the UK, stretching 186 miles from St Dogmaels to Amroth through some of the most varied coastal scenery in Britain. The region encompasses Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the Tywi Valley, and the Gower Peninsula — the first area in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in 1956. From Tenby's pastel-coloured harbour to the cathedral city of St Davids, the smallest city in the United Kingdom, there is a remarkable concentration of history and landscape packed into a compact area. The drive from Carmarthen to St Davids covers roughly 58 miles, while Swansea to Tenby is around 47 miles, making South West Wales wonderfully manageable for a touring holiday. Quiet country lanes wind past Iron Age hill forts, Norman castles like Pembroke and Kidwelly, and broad sandy beaches such as Rhossili Bay and Barafundle Bay. The coastline is ideal for campervan travel, with well-spaced stopping points and plenty of smaller roads suited to all vehicle sizes. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for narrow lanes or a larger motorhome for family comfort, Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across South West Wales, giving you a genuine choice of vehicles and flexible pick-up options to start your adventure right where you want it.

Best time to visit

South West Wales is at its liveliest from May to September, when long daylight hours open up the coast for walking, surfing, and wildlife watching — puffins nest on Skomer Island from late April to mid-July. The Tenby Arts Festival in late September offers a quieter cultural highlight as the summer crowds ease. Campsites across Pembrokeshire and Gower are generally open from Easter through October, with the best pitch availability in May, June, and early September. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa during shoulder months often means more competitive pricing from local owners, and you still get mild, pleasant conditions for exploring South West Wales at your own pace.

The best road trips in South West Wales

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.

The Pembrokeshire Coastal Loop

95 km 3–6 days

Start in Haverfordwest and trace the coast south through Broad Haven and Marloes before reaching St Davids. Continue to Fishguard and loop back inland — roughly 95 km of quiet lanes ideal for a campervan, with clifftop parking spots and seasonal campsite pitches along the way.

Gower Peninsula Circuit

80 km 3–5 days

From Swansea, head west across the Gower to Rhossili Bay, then follow the south coast through Oxwich and Port Eynon. At around 80 km, this short loop suits a compact campervan and includes some of South West Wales's finest beaches, plus the Gower Heritage Centre near Parkmill.

Carmarthenshire and Tywi Valley Trail

190 km 5–8 days

Drive from Llandeilo through the Tywi Valley, visiting Dinefwr Park and Carreg Cennen Castle, before heading south to Laugharne — Dylan Thomas's home town. This 190 km route through South West Wales mixes rolling farmland with estuary views, and motorhome-friendly sites are plentiful near Carmarthen.

260 km 5–8 days

Link Kidwelly Castle, Pembroke Castle, and St Davids Cathedral on a 260 km tour that traces the southern coast of South West Wales. The A477 and A4075 keep the driving straightforward for a motorhome, with well-equipped campsites at Saundersfoot and Whitland for overnight stops.

The Full Pembrokeshire Coast

340 km 7–11 days

Follow the entire Pembrokeshire coastline from Amroth to St Dogmaels, dipping inland to Preseli Hills and Castell Henllys Iron Age Village. At 340 km, this route needs a week or more and rewards slow travel in a campervan, with wild headlands, sheltered harbours, and quiet lanes throughout South West Wales.

Grand South West Wales Explorer

520 km 10–15 days

Combine Gower, Carmarthenshire, and Pembrokeshire in one 520 km journey. What you need to know about roads and motorways in South West Wales

South West Wales is served by the M4 motorway as far as Pont Abraham near Swansea, after which the A48 and A40 carry you westward into Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. There are no toll roads in the region. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many rural roads in Pembrokeshire are single-track with passing places, so a compact campervan can be easier to manoeuvre. Rest areas and lay-bys are well signposted along the A40 and A477, and fuel stations become less frequent west of Haverfordwest, so plan your fill-ups accordingly.

Very nice owners, kind and flexible! The camper van was easy to understand, and comfortable to use - above expectation. Thank you!!

Paloma was a pleasure to drive and really comfortable for our family of four. The van was equipped with everything we needed, beds were spacious and had safety nets, the shower and toilet were very handy, there was plenty of storage space and lots of room to move around. Susana was really helpful and accommodating and very easy to communicate with throughout our trip. The only disappointing aspect is that the fridge did not work, and the freezer only worked when plugged in. While the freezer was ok for keeping some items cool, it did make things considerably more difficult for us - we were travelling with 2 young children and cooked for ourselves most evenings. It was frustrating having to visit a shop every day/every other day and we ended up having to bin quite a lot of food. It is a shame this wasn't mentioned in the listing as it would have impacted our decision to book the van. Every other aspect was faultless and despite the issue with the fridge we had a really wonderful 2 week adventure in Paloma. We would definitely recommend if you are happy to operate without a fridge and can rely on the freezer.
