Find a wide selection of campervans and motorhomes for hire in Powys and the surrounding area. Discover unique vehicles offered by private owners: from compact campervans for 2 people, perfect for couples, to spacious 6-berth motorhomes, ideal for families. Flexibility, competitive prices and insurance included.
The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Powys stretches across nearly a quarter of Wales yet remains one of its least densely populated counties, with fewer than 27 people per square kilometre. From the Brecon Beacons National Park (now Bannau Brycheiniog) in the south to the shores of Lake Vyrnwy in the north, the county covers a vast swathe of rolling uplands, river valleys, and open moorland. The drive from Brecon to Llanidloes follows roughly 60 km of the A470, winding through the Cambrian Mountains with layby stops overlooking reservoirs and ancient woodland. Head further north and the 75 km stretch from Welshpool to Builth Wells takes you past the Royal Welsh Showground and the timber-framed market towns that give Powys its distinctive character. Walkers flock to Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain at 886 metres, while history enthusiasts explore Powis Castle and its Italianate terraced gardens near Welshpool. The Elan Valley, often called the Welsh Lake District, supplies a chain of Victorian-era dams surrounded by red kite territory — a genuine wildlife spectacle. Quiet single-track lanes and spacious campsite pitches make this county particularly well suited to campervan and motorhome travel, with plenty of room to breathe between stops. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across mid-Wales, choosing from a range of vehicles that match both your group size and your appetite for adventure.
May to September offers the longest daylight hours and the driest conditions for exploring Powys by campervan. The Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells each July draws thousands to celebrate Welsh agriculture and rural life — book your motorhome hire early for that week. Autumn brings rich colour to the Elan Valley and quieter roads, while Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive pricing outside the peak summer months. Spring lambing season across the Powys hills is a memorable experience, and many campsites open from Easter onward with full hook-up facilities ready for the new season.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Start in Brecon and loop through Bannau Brycheiniog, passing the Pontsticill Reservoir and climbing near Pen y Fan. Continue to Crickhowell and the Usk Valley before returning via Sennybridge. Around 120 km of well-surfaced roads ideal for a campervan, with several campsites offering electric hook-ups along the route.
A 95 km route from Rhayader through the chain of Elan Valley dams — Craig Goch, Pen y Garreg, and Garreg Ddu — then looping south to Llanwrtyd Wells, Britain's smallest town. Red kites soar overhead and the roads are quiet enough for a leisurely motorhome pace. Wild camping spots and small sites dot the valley.
Follow the A483 corridor from Builth Wells north through Newtown and on to Welshpool, covering around 180 km with detours to Powis Castle and the Montgomery Canal. This campervan-friendly route passes through market towns with local produce shops and riverside picnic areas perfect for overnight stops.
Travel 210 km from Llandrindod Wells westward into the Cambrian Mountains, through Devil's Bridge, then north to Machynlleth before returning via the A470. Remote moorland, forestry tracks, and reservoir views define this route. Motorhome drivers should check height restrictions on forest roads near Hafren Forest.
A 280 km circuit linking Brecon, Builth Wells, Rhayader, Llanidloes, Newtown, and Welshpool before heading south again through the Severn Valley. This grand tour of Powys covers every landscape the county offers, from upland bog to lush river meadows. Campervan and motorhome pitches are plentiful in each town.
Starting in Hay-on-Wye, this 320 km route follows the Powys borderlands north through Knighton and along Offa's Dyke Path territory, then to Lake Vyrnwy and back south via Llanfyllin and Welshpool. Expect rolling farmland, quiet B-roads, and well-equipped campsites near each stop. A relaxed pace suits this route best.

Powys offers a wide spread of campsites, from riverside pitches in the Usk Valley to upland sites near the Elan Valley reservoirs. Many cater to both campervans and motorhomes with hardstanding pitches, electric hook-ups, and modern shower blocks. Smaller certified sites across mid-Wales provide a quieter alternative, often with just a handful of pitches and direct access to walking trails. Whether you prefer a fully serviced park or a simple farm pitch, Powys has options across the county.
Powys has no motorways; the A470 and A483 are the main north–south routes, both single carriageway for most of their length. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. There are no toll roads anywhere in the county. Many rural lanes are narrow with passing places, so a smaller campervan can be easier to manoeuvre on back roads. Fuel stations are spaced further apart than in urban Wales, so fill up when you can. Lay-bys along the A470 through the Cambrian Mountains offer convenient rest stops with scenic views.
The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
