Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Monmouthshire

Monmouthshire — a region worth exploring

Monmouthshire's stretch of the River Wye has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with 58 miles of river valley winding through ancient woodland and limestone gorges. This Welsh county sits at the gateway between England and Wales, offering a landscape shaped by centuries of border history. From the imposing ruins of Raglan Castle to the atmospheric remains of Tintern Abbey — which inspired William Wordsworth's famous poem — there is no shortage of landmarks to explore at your own pace. The market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth are roughly 15 miles apart, connected by quiet roads that pass through rolling farmland, while the drive from Chepstow to Hay-on-Wye covers around 45 miles through some of the most rewarding scenery in south-east Wales. Monmouthshire also borders the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog), giving you easy access to mountain trails and open moorland. The roads here are well suited to campervans, with a mix of A-roads and narrow country lanes that reward slower, more deliberate travel. Whether you are after a weekend escape or a longer tour, hiring a motorhome through Yescapa connects you with local owners across Monmouthshire and the surrounding area, so you can find the right vehicle — from a compact campervan to a fully equipped family setup — and set off with everything you need.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Monmouthshire, when the Wye Valley is at its greenest and outdoor attractions are fully open. The Abergavenny Food Festival, held each September, draws food lovers from across the UK and is well worth timing your visit around. Spring brings quieter roads and wildflower displays along the Offa's Dyke Path. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside the peak summer weeks of July and August, as peer-to-peer pricing tends to be more flexible. Book ahead for bank holiday weekends, when Monmouthshire's campsites fill up quickly.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Monmouthshire

Monmouthshire is well connected by the M4 motorway to the south and the A40 and A449 running through the county. The M4's Second Severn Crossing (Prince of Wales Bridge) provides toll-free access from England. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many of Monmouthshire's rural roads are single-track with passing places, so take care with larger vehicles. What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Monmouthshire

Martine was a wonderful host and took us through the many features and inventory with kindness and good humour. She made great efforts to help overcome our language barrier, for which we were very grateful. The motor home was in excellent condition and very well appointed. The electric self lowering bed was very comfortable and retracted to the roof freeing up valuable space for the living quarters. The Fiat vehicle controls were easy to handle and once we got used to the size was no trouble motoring around the Loire. The vehicle was very reliable and well maintained. Martine was quick to reply to a water heating issue we had and resolved our query with easy to follow instructions. Overall, we were very satisfied with our 8 day rental and would not hesitate to recommend this motor home for future rentals.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience renting Fiona (the van). It has been beautifully made, and all the tiny little details have been so well thought out to make it extra cosy. It is easy to drive, cute and compact, but never felt too small. The owner was so lovely and helpful, and the overall the rental experience was so smooth. It made a very memorable and special trip :)
