Why choose Chirk for your road trip

Chirk — a city worth exploring

Chirk's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1805, carries the Llangollen Canal 38 metres above the River Dee in one of the most remarkable feats of engineering in Wales. This small border town sits where the rolling Welsh hills meet the Shropshire plains, making it a perfect starting point for exploring both countries. Chirk Castle, a 700-year-old fortress built by Roger Mortimer in 1295, is one of the few Welsh Marches castles still lived in today, with its formal gardens and parkland open to visitors year-round. A short walk from the town centre takes you to the Chirk Aqueduct and Chirk Tunnel, where the canal crosses the Ceiriog Valley in dramatic fashion. The Offa's Dyke Path national trail passes right through the area, offering superb walking with views across the Dee Valley. Llangollen is just 11 km to the west, home to its famous International Musical Eisteddfod, while Oswestry lies 12 km to the east across the English border. The surrounding roads are well suited to campervans, with wide A-roads connecting the main towns and quieter lanes winding through the valleys. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners in the region, giving you the freedom to explore the Welsh Marches at your own pace while supporting the local community.

Best time to visit

Chirk is a wonderful destination from spring through to autumn. The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in July draws performers from across the globe and is well worth timing your visit around. May and June bring wildflowers to the Ceiriog Valley, ideal for walking the Offa's Dyke Path. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan through Yescapa early helps you secure the best choice from local owners. Autumn colours around Chirk Castle are particularly striking, and campsites in the area tend to be quieter, giving you more flexibility with your motorhome hire.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
