Wrexham became Wales's first city in over a century when it received city status in 2022 as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, making it a fresh and exciting base for exploring North Wales. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just south of the city, carries the Llangollen Canal 38 metres above the River Dee and stretches 307 metres across the valley — a remarkable sight whether you view it from below or walk across it. From Wrexham, Snowdonia National Park lies roughly 60 miles to the west, while the heritage town of Llangollen is just 16 miles south along the A539. Closer to the city centre, you can explore the medieval St Giles' Church with its striking 41-metre tower, wander through Erddig Hall and its restored 18th-century gardens managed by the National Trust, or follow the Clywedog Valley Trail through ancient woodland. The surrounding countryside is ideal for campervan travel, with quiet lanes winding through the Dee Valley and the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offering panoramic ridge walks. Wrexham also sits close to the English border, so you can easily combine a Welsh trip with stops in Chester or Shropshire. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across North Wales, giving you a wider choice of vehicles and a more personal, peer-to-peer experience that suits every style of adventure.
May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip around Wrexham, when longer daylight hours let you make the most of the Dee Valley and surrounding hills. The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in early July draws performers from over 50 countries and is well worth timing your visit around. Autumn brings rich colour to Erddig's parkland and quieter roads across North Wales. Through Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside the peak summer months, thanks to flexible pricing set by individual owners. Booking a few weeks ahead for June or July helps secure the vehicle that best fits your plans.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow the A539 south from Wrexham to Llangollen, then trace the River Dee westward through Corwen and on to Bala Lake. At 85 km, this short loop suits a campervan perfectly, with riverside pitches near Llangollen and scenic stops at Horseshoe Falls and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct along the way.
Head east from Wrexham into Chester, then south through Whitchurch and Oswestry before looping back via Chirk Castle. This 120 km route crosses the Welsh-English border twice and passes Iron Age hillforts, canal basins, and market towns — great for a relaxed campervan break with plenty of places to stop.
Drive west from Wrexham along the A5 to Betws-y-Coed, then north to Conwy and along the A55 coast road through Llandudno and Bangor. This 300 km circuit takes in Edward I's castle ring, including Conwy and Caernarfon, with motorhome-friendly aires and campsites dotted along the coastline.
From Wrexham, head to Betws-y-Coed and loop through Snowdonia via Capel Curig, Pen-y-Pass, and Beddgelert before returning through Dolgellau and Bala. At around 350 km, this route offers mountain passes, lakeside parking, and forest trails — ideal for a motorhome adventure through Wales's highest peaks.
Start in Wrexham and travel south through the Berwyn Mountains to Machynlleth, then follow Cardigan Bay north through Barmouth and Harlech before cutting inland to Snowdonia and returning east. This 520 km journey covers diverse Welsh landscapes and suits those with a week or more to explore.
A full 650 km loop from Wrexham heads south to Brecon Beacons, west to Pembrokeshire, north along Cardigan Bay, through Snowdonia, and back east. You pass through five distinct regions, with campervan-friendly stops at Tenby, Aberystwyth, and Caernarfon making this the ultimate Welsh road trip.

Wrexham and the surrounding area of North Wales offer a good spread of campsites, from riverside pitches in the Dee Valley to hillside spots with views across the Clwydian Range. Many sites provide electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, and dedicated motorhome service points, so whether you arrive in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome, you will find suitable facilities. Several sites sit within easy reach of walking trails and heritage attractions.
Wrexham sits at the junction of the A483 and A5, giving you quick access to the motorway network via the M54 to the south-east. Most major roads in North Wales are toll-free, though the A55 expressway along the coast has a few sections with lower speed limits for larger vehicles. If your motorhome exceeds 3.05 metres in height, check clearances on older routes through towns like Llangollen. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Lay-bys and service areas are well spaced along the A5 corridor.
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had a great experience. All went smoothly and the camper van was perfect. Mike was very accommodating and communicative throughout and we would recommend highly.
Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
