Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Vale of Glamorgan

Vale of Glamorgan — a region worth exploring

The Vale of Glamorgan stretches across 26 miles of Heritage Coast between Cardiff and Bridgend, making it one of the most accessible coastal regions in south Wales. From the dramatic cliff formations at Nash Point to the medieval market town of Cowbridge, this compact area packs in centuries of history and natural beauty. The Barry Island Pleasure Park has drawn visitors since the Victorian era, while Llantwit Major — one of the oldest centres of learning in Britain — sits just 15 miles west along the coast. Inland, the rolling farmland and quiet lanes between Cowbridge and Llancarfan are ideal for slow-paced touring, with plenty of space to pull over and enjoy the views. The distance from Cardiff to the western edge of the Vale at Ogmore-by-Sea is roughly 22 miles, so you can explore the entire region without long drives. Coastal paths connect Penarth Pier to Aberthaw, passing through sheltered bays and limestone headlands that feel wonderfully remote despite being so close to the capital. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across south Wales, giving you the flexibility to pick up a vehicle near Cardiff and be parked up by the coast within the hour. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for the narrow lanes or a larger motorhome for a family break, the Vale of Glamorgan rewards those who take their time.

Best time to visit

The Vale of Glamorgan is at its liveliest from May to September, when the Heritage Coast paths are in full bloom and campsites across the region open their seasonal pitches. The Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival in October is a brilliant reason to extend the season, celebrating local Welsh produce in the heart of the Vale. Summer brings long daylight hours perfect for evening walks along Nash Point, while spring offers quieter roads and wildflower-covered clifftops. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing means you can often find a campervan at lower rates outside the July–August peak, making shoulder-season trips especially good value.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan is well connected by the M4 motorway, which runs along its northern edge and provides quick access from Cardiff, Swansea, and Bristol. There are no toll roads within the Vale itself, and the Severn Bridge crossings into England are now toll-free. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Most roads through the Vale are B-roads and country lanes — generally well maintained but occasionally narrow, so take care with larger vehicles near villages like Llancarfan and St Donats.
