Why hire a campervan or motorhome in South West Wales

South West Wales — a region worth exploring

South West Wales is home to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the only coastal national trail in the UK, stretching 186 miles from St Dogmaels to Amroth through some of the most varied coastal scenery in Britain. The region encompasses Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the Tywi Valley, and the Gower Peninsula — the first area in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in 1956. From Tenby's pastel-coloured harbour to the cathedral city of St Davids, the smallest city in the United Kingdom, there is a remarkable concentration of history and landscape packed into a compact area. The drive from Carmarthen to St Davids covers roughly 58 miles, while Swansea to Tenby is around 47 miles, making South West Wales wonderfully manageable for a touring holiday. Quiet country lanes wind past Iron Age hill forts, Norman castles like Pembroke and Kidwelly, and broad sandy beaches such as Rhossili Bay and Barafundle Bay. The coastline is ideal for campervan travel, with well-spaced stopping points and plenty of smaller roads suited to all vehicle sizes. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for narrow lanes or a larger motorhome for family comfort, Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across South West Wales, giving you a genuine choice of vehicles and flexible pick-up options to start your adventure right where you want it.

Best time to visit

South West Wales is at its liveliest from May to September, when long daylight hours open up the coast for walking, surfing, and wildlife watching — puffins nest on Skomer Island from late April to mid-July. The Tenby Arts Festival in late September offers a quieter cultural highlight as the summer crowds ease. Campsites across Pembrokeshire and Gower are generally open from Easter through October, with the best pitch availability in May, June, and early September. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa during shoulder months often means more competitive pricing from local owners, and you still get mild, pleasant conditions for exploring South West Wales at your own pace.

The Pembrokeshire Coastal Loop

95 km 3–6 days

Gower Peninsula Circuit

80 km 3–5 days

From Swansea, head west across the Gower to Rhossili Bay, then follow the south coast through Oxwich and Port Eynon. At around 80 km, this short loop suits a compact campervan and includes some of South West Wales's finest beaches, plus the Gower Heritage Centre near Parkmill.

Carmarthenshire and Tywi Valley Trail

Grand South West Wales Explorer

520 km 10–15 days

Combine Gower, Carmarthenshire, and Pembrokeshire in one 520 km journey. What you need to know about roads and motorways in South West Wales

South West Wales is served by the M4 motorway as far as Pont Abraham near Swansea, after which the A48 and A40 carry you westward into Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. There are no toll roads in the region. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many rural roads in Pembrokeshire are single-track with passing places, so a compact campervan can be easier to manoeuvre. Rest areas and lay-bys are well signposted along the A40 and A477, and fuel stations become less frequent west of Haverfordwest, so plan your fill-ups accordingly.

Fantastic rental, they were so helpful and got us all set up for our first ever campervan trip. The van was spotless and practically brand new. Everything was so easy to use and we just sent up the bed each day as we set off for each new place.

We absolutely loved our time with Javier’s Fiat campervan and would happily recommend it. From the outset, Javier was incredibly helpful and accommodating, answering all our questions and requests, arriving exactly when agreed and giving us an excellent, thorough handover. The van itself was brilliantly equipped, stylish, comfortable and surprisingly spacious, with loads of clever storage. It genuinely felt like a little home on wheels rather than simply a rental camper. Another big plus is just how user-friendly everything is. Even if you have little or no previous campervan experience, you could feel completely confident using it. Javier provided clear instructions for all the important systems — water, pumps, lighting, electrics and general operation — and everything was incredibly straightforward and simple to use. Nothing felt complicated or intimidating. We travelled both on-grid and completely off-grid, and it handled both perfectly. The solar and battery system worked brilliantly, the fridge stayed perfectly cold, and the enormous water capacity was a massive bonus — we showered normally throughout our trip and never managed to run out of water! And the shower itself deserves a special mention: such a clever use of space and genuinely one of our favourite features. On the road it was equally impressive. It drove really well, was surprisingly economical on fuel, and its size was absolutely perfect for travelling around Spain. We took it through little roads and villages without any drama and could generally park it in a normal car-sized space — a huge advantage compared with travelling in a large motorhome. The interior design is super chic and homely, the layout has been really well thought through, and there was more than enough space and storage for everything we needed. Overall, fantastic value for money, a great owner and a fabulous little campervan that gave us exactly the adventure we wanted. Whether you’re an experienced campervan traveller or trying one for the first time, it’s an incredibly easy and enjoyable van to travel in. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would absolutely rent it again. Highly recommended — thank you, Javier! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
