Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire — a region worth exploring

Pembrokeshire is the only county in Wales that sits entirely within a national park — the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, established in 1952 and covering 240 square miles of rugged headlands, sheltered coves, and offshore islands. The 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path traces the county's edge from St Dogmaels in the north to Amroth in the south, passing landmarks such as the medieval Bishop's Palace at St Davids, the Norman fortress of Pembroke Castle, and the wildlife-rich island of Skomer, home to one of the world's largest Manx shearwater colonies. From Tenby to St Davids, the distance is roughly 30 miles, while Haverfordwest to Fishguard covers about 15 miles — both routes winding through lanes well suited to smaller vehicles. Broad Haven and Freshwater West offer wide sandy beaches, and the Preseli Hills inland provide open moorland with views stretching to the coast. Narrow country roads and single-track lanes are common, so a compact campervan can be ideal for exploring quieter corners, though larger motorhome drivers will find well-maintained A-roads connecting the main towns. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Pembrokeshire, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your group size and travel style — a flexible, peer-to-peer way to discover this remarkable stretch of the Welsh coastline.

Best time to visit

Pembrokeshire comes alive from May to September, when coastal wildflowers carpet the clifftops and puffins return to Skomer Island between April and late July. The Tenby Arts Festival each September fills the harbour town with live music and exhibitions, making it a rewarding time to visit. Summer is peak season, so booking your campervan on Yescapa early gives you the widest choice of vehicles from local owners, often at better rates than last-minute searches. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and excellent birdwatching along the Pembrokeshire coast, with most campsites open from Easter through October.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire has no motorways, so travel relies on A-roads such as the A40 and A477, which connect Haverfordwest, Pembroke, and Tenby. There are no toll roads anywhere in the county. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many rural lanes are narrow and winding, with passing places — take care in larger vehicles. Fuel stations are spaced out in western areas, so fill up in Haverfordwest or Milford Haven before heading to St Davids or the northern coast.

We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️

It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
