Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Wales

Wales — a region worth exploring

Wales packs over 1,680 miles of coastline into a country roughly 170 miles long from north to south, making it one of the most coast-dense destinations in Europe for a road trip. From the towering peaks of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in the north to the golden sands of Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsula, the landscape shifts dramatically within short distances. The drive from Cardiff to Caernarfon covers around 190 miles and takes you through the Brecon Beacons National Park, past the market town of Brecon, and into the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia). Head west and you reach St Davids, Britain's smallest city, home to a magnificent 12th-century cathedral. Pembrokeshire's coastal path alone stretches 186 miles, tracing cliffs, coves and wildlife-rich islands like Skomer, famous for its puffin colonies. Wales is wonderfully suited to campervan travel — its network of single-track lanes, coastal car parks and rural campsites rewards those who travel at a slower pace. Compact motorhomes handle the narrower roads of the Llŷn Peninsula with ease, while larger vehicles find plenty of well-equipped sites in the south and mid-Wales. Through Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Wales, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your route, your group size and your budget.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for exploring Wales by campervan, with the longest daylight hours and the mildest conditions for coastal and mountain routes. June is ideal for catching the Hay Festival of Literature in Hay-on-Wye, while August brings the Royal National Eisteddfod, a celebration of Welsh culture held in a different location each year. Spring and early autumn are quieter, with campsites across Pembrokeshire and Snowdonia more readily available. Through Yescapa, you can often find better rates from local owners during these shoulder months, making it a smart time to hire a motorhome and enjoy Wales at your own pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Wales

Wales has no motorway toll roads, so you can travel freely without worrying about charges. The M4 runs along the south coast connecting Cardiff and Swansea, while the A55 expressway crosses the north. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Many routes through Snowdonia and mid-Wales follow single-track roads with passing places — take your time and use lay-bys. Fuel stations can be sparse in rural areas, so fill up before heading into the Cambrian Mountains or the Llŷn Peninsula.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Wales

Martine was a wonderful host and took us through the many features and inventory with kindness and good humour. She made great efforts to help overcome our language barrier, for which we were very grateful. The motor home was in excellent condition and very well appointed. The electric self lowering bed was very comfortable and retracted to the roof freeing up valuable space for the living quarters. The Fiat vehicle controls were easy to handle and once we got used to the size was no trouble motoring around the Loire. The vehicle was very reliable and well maintained. Martine was quick to reply to a water heating issue we had and resolved our query with easy to follow instructions. Overall, we were very satisfied with our 8 day rental and would not hesitate to recommend this motor home for future rentals.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience renting Fiona (the van). It has been beautifully made, and all the tiny little details have been so well thought out to make it extra cosy. It is easy to drive, cute and compact, but never felt too small. The owner was so lovely and helpful, and the overall the rental experience was so smooth. It made a very memorable and special trip :)
