Why choose Cardiff for your road trip

Cardiff — a city worth exploring

Cardiff Castle has stood at the heart of the Welsh capital for nearly 2,000 years, its walls built on the foundations of a Roman fort dating back to around 55 AD. Today the city blends that layered history with a thoroughly modern waterfront at Cardiff Bay, where the Senedd — home of the Welsh Parliament — sits beside the Wales Millennium Centre, a striking bronze-steel arts venue hosting opera, ballet and musicals. Stroll through Bute Park, one of the largest urban parks in Wales, stretching along the River Taff right from the castle grounds, or browse the ornate Victorian and Edwardian arcades that thread through the city centre. The National Museum Cardiff houses an outstanding collection of Impressionist art, while the Principality Stadium dominates the skyline just minutes away. Beyond the city, the Brecon Beacons National Park lies roughly 48 km to the north, and the elegant Georgian city of Bath is about 100 km to the east — both within easy reach by road. Cardiff's compact layout and good ring-road access make it a practical base for exploring South Wales by campervan or motorhome. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across the Cardiff area, giving you flexible pick-up options and the kind of insider tips that make a road trip feel personal from the very first mile.

Best time to visit

Cardiff comes alive in summer, when the Welsh capital hosts events such as the Cardiff Festival running through July and August, filling the city with open-air music, food markets and street performances. The Six Nations rugby weekends in February and March bring a brilliant atmosphere to the Principality Stadium and surrounding streets. For campervan travel, late spring through early autumn offers the longest daylight hours and the most comfortable conditions for coastal drives. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months can help you find better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners across the Cardiff area.

Where to park your motorhome

Cardiff operates pay-and-display parking across the city centre, with height barriers on many multi-storey car parks that restrict access for larger vehicles. For motorhomes and campervans, surface-level car parks near the waterfront and parks tend to be the most practical option. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted unless specifically signed, so always check local signage before settling in for the night.

  • Sophia Gardens Car Park, 1km west — Large surface car park beside the River Taff and Glamorgan Cricket Ground, with good clearance for taller vehicles. A short walk into the city centre via Bute Park.
  • Cardiff Bay Barrage Car Park, 3km south — Open-air car park at the southern end of Cardiff Bay, suitable for larger vehicles. Convenient for the waterfront, Wales Millennium Centre and Mermaid Quay.
  • County Hall Car Park, 2km south — Surface car park in Atlantic Wharf near Cardiff Bay, with no height restrictions. Useful for visiting the bay area and the Senedd during daytime hours.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Cardiff

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
